Group 1001

is a consumer-centric, technology-driven family of insurance companies on a mission to deliver outstanding value and operational performance by combining financial strength and stability with deep insurance expertise and a can-do culture. Group1001’s culture emphasizes the importance of collaboration, communication, core business focus, risk management, and striving for outcomes. This goal extends to how we hire and onboard our most valuable assets – our employees.

Why This Role Matters:

  • As a Staff Data Platform Engineer, you will be a key technical leader responsible for defining and driving the strategic direction of our data infrastructure and data product ecosystem. You will work across multiple teams to evolve and scale our industry-leading data platform, ensuring alignment with business and analytics needs. Your leadership will be critical in establishing best practices, mentoring senior engineers, and delivering high-impact platform capabilities that enable data-driven decision-making across the organization.
  • You'll be the organizational expert in data platform tooling and practices. You'll define the north star, demonstrate what great looks like, and enable domain teams to deliver trusted data products. This means owning vendor relationships, building reference implementations, consulting on new initiatives, and training the broader organization on modern data engineering practices
  • You'll also have the opportunity to shape and lead our data governance and data mesh architecture — building the foundation for trusted, discoverable, self-service data products leveraging a modern stack including Snowflake, Dagster, Coalesce, Atlan, and Datafold.

*Please note: This position requires an in-person interview.

How You'll Contribute:

  • Define and drive the technical roadmap for data platform infrastructure and our data product ecosystem, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance across the organization
  • Lead the design and implementation of complex, organization-wide data systems that support analytics, machine learning, AI, and business intelligence workloads
  • Architect and evolve our data governance framework, enabling domain ownership, self-service data quality resolution, and trusted, discoverable data products
  • Design and implement data observability capabilities — including lineage, anomaly detection, and automated quality monitoring — to ensure data reliability at scale
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards, best practices, and architectural patterns for data infrastructure across multiple teams
  • Partner with senior leadership and stakeholders across the business to align platform capabilities with strategic priorities
  • Mentor and guide senior engineers and platform leads, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement
  • Champion data mesh principles, enabling domain teams to own and publish data products with clear contracts and SLAs
  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies, tools, and frameworks to keep our platform at the forefront of industry innovation
  • Lead incident response and resolution for critical platform issues, ensuring minimal business impact
  • Manage vendor partnerships and technology evaluations to optimize our infrastructure investments

What We're Looking For:

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced in Cloud Platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP), Snowflake including performance optimization, cost management, and architectural best practices, Python + SQL, RDBMS, Orchestration tools (Airflow/Dagster), Data pipelines, IaC (Terraform), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD, Monitoring, Security and Disaster Recovery

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Master's degree or equivalent experience preferred

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of experience in data platform or related field
  • Proven track record of leading high-impact, organization-wide data initiatives from conception through delivery
  • Experience operating data platforms at scale in production environments with high reliability requirements
  • Experience designing and implementing data governance programs, including domain ownership models, stewardship frameworks, and data quality SLAs
  • Experience evaluating, implementing, and managing commercial off-the-shelf data tools — including vendor selection, procurement, integration, and ongoing relationship management
  • Track record of defining technical standards, best practices, and reference architectures that scale across multiple teams
  • Experience building exemplar solutions (e.g., reference pipelines, templates, accelerators) that enable other teams to adopt patterns consistently
  • Demonstrated habit of staying current with industry trends, emerging tools, and best practices — with a track record of bringing relevant innovations into production

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in insurance, financial services, or other regulated industries with data compliance requirements
  • Experience designing and delivering technical training programs, enablement sessions, or certification curricula for engineering or data teams
  • Experience engineering a data product function, data marketplace, or self-service data platform Background of enabling data science or AI/ML teams with governed, discoverable datasets
  • Competencies and Soft Skills:
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, influence without authority, and build consensus among stakeholders at various levels
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate technical strategy, trade-offs, and recommendations to executive audiences
  • Experience mentoring and guiding senior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement
  • Ability to operate as an internal consultant — listening deeply, understanding domain context, and tailoring guidance to team-specific needs
