TAYS is seeking a Mainframe Storage Engineer to join our dynamic team! The Mainframe Storage Engineer contributes to various projects within a federal agency. This role is based in Woodlawn, MD, and requires a qualified candidate with robust analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, coupled with keen attention to detail.   

The candidate must be local to the DMV area. Must be on-site five days a week in Woodlawn, MD.


Key Required Skills: z/OS, Time Sharing Option (TSO), Data Domain, Dell EMC DLm8500 Systems, ISPF, InsightIQ, Technical Writing, Ansible Playbooks.Position Overview:As a Mainframe Storage Engineer, you will lead initiatives aimed at optimizing operational efficiency and enhancing system performance. You will serve as the primary technical liaison between application teams, stakeholders, and platform engineers, ensuring seamless integration and efficient system operation. This role requires a hands-on approach to system management, troubleshooting, and documentation while collaborating with a skilled team of technical experts.Key Responsibilities:

  • Operational Efficiency: Spearhead the development of strategies that improve operational processes and system performance.
  • Collaboration: Act as the technical lead for platform-related initiatives, working closely with cross-functional teams to address technical challenges.
  • System Implementation & Updates: Assist technical leads with the execution of system and software updates, ensuring smooth integration and functionality.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including processes, configurations, and procedural guidelines.
  • Daily Operations Support: Provide continuous support for daily system operations, including troubleshooting and resolution of issues across platforms and applications.
  • Status Reporting: Regularly update stakeholders on task progress, project milestones, and any challenges encountered.
  • System Administration: Provide hands-on system administration support to ensure high availability and performance of mainframe systems.
  • Issue Resolution: Proactively identify and resolve system issues, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Other Duties: Undertake additional tasks as needed to support team objectives and organizational goals.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience as a Mainframe Storage Engineer.
  • 7+ years of experience in problem monitoring and resolution for virtual tape architectures.
  • 5+ years working with Dell EMC, VSM, VLE, and ZFS Virtual Tape Libraries.
  • 5+ years of expertise in IBM Job Control Language (JCL).
  • 4+ years with CA-1 Tape Management System (TMS) and CA Vantage.
  • 4+ years supporting Disaster Recovery planning, testing, and restoration for virtual tape storage systems.
  • 3+ years designing and building Storage Management Systems (SMS).
  • 2+ years experience with Data Domain Management Center (DDMC).
  • 2+ years experience using TSO on mainframe systems.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with Interactive System Productivity Facility (ISPF).
  • Advanced skills in the Linux command-line environment.
  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Proficient in z/OS and Time-Sharing Option (TSO).
  • Extensive experience with Data Domain and Dell EMC DLm8500 systems.
  • Proven ability to develop high-quality operational documentation following industry best practices.
  • Expertise in automating tasks using Ansible playbooks.
  • Strong background in troubleshooting and maintaining virtual tape architectures.
  • Experience in Cyber Recovery for virtual tape systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, install, configure, and deploy storage hardware in multi-node architectures.
  • Skilled in developing engineering scripts and best-practice project plans to migrate workloads to virtual tape systems.
  • Prior experience working within federal government projects.
  • Self-starter with a strong sense of initiative and motivation in a dynamic work environment.
  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects effectively.
