Mechanical Designer

LocationHouston, Texas, United States
TypeOnsite

Position Summary:

Industrial Service Solutions is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Designer to design and detail custom enclosures, skids, mounting structures, and electrical equipment housings for industrial power systems. This is a hands-on design role focused on creating practical, fabrication-ready solutions for engine generator skids, VFD drive enclosures, control panels, SCR lineups, MV/LV switchgear housings, E-houses, cooling systems for liquid-cooled drives, piping systems, and cable management structures.

The ideal candidate will excel at producing detailed fabrication drawings quickly and efficiently while collaborating with electrical engineers, customers, and fabrication teams to deliver solutions that meet specifications, budgets, and timelines. This role involves collaborating closely with customers and a multi-disciplinary engineering team to deliver comprehensive technical solutions that meet specifications, budgets, and timelines. The Mechanical Designer will provide critical support throughout project lifecycles, from initial design and equipment selection through fabrication, installation, and commissioning, while building strong client relationships and ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design custom skids and mounting structures for engine generator sets, including base frames, isolation mounts, and structural supports
  • Design enclosures and housings for VFD drives, control panels, SCR lineups, MV-switchgear, and LV switchgear
  • Develop E-house layouts and structures for outdoor electrical equipment installations
  • Design cable tray systems, cable management structures, and support steel
  • Create weatherproof and marine-grade enclosures with appropriate ingress protection
  • Design access panels, doors, ventilation openings, and lifting provisions
  • Design cooling systems for liquid-cooled VFD drives, including heat exchangers, pumps, piping, and plumbing
  • Design engine cooling system installations including radiators, expansion tanks, and associated piping
  • Design exhaust system installations including silencers, flex joints, supports, and routing
  • Design fuel system installations including day tanks, piping, and containment
  • Select and specify fans, louvers, ducting, and ventilation for equipment cooling
  • Create detailed fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and installation details using
  • SolidWorks (and AUTOCAD for electrical and legacy files)
  • Develop equipment layouts and general arrangement drawings showing all major components
  • Produce weldment drawings with dimensions, tolerances, and welding symbols
  • Create Bills of Materials (BOMs) and cut lists for fabrication
  • Generate painting and coating specifications
  • Prepare installation and rigging drawings with weight distributions and lifting points
  • Calculate pipe sizing, pressure drop, and flow rates for cooling and fuel systems
  • Determine appropriate fastener sizes and connection details
  • Size structural members (beams, channels, angles) for loads and deflection limits
  • Verify equipment weights, center of gravity, and stability
  • Basic thermal calculations for cooling requirements (advanced thermal/vibration/FEA analysis is a plus but not required)
  • is a plus but not required: Perform structural load calculations for skid frames, mounting platforms, and equipment supports
  • Create and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) in the company ERP system
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers to coordinate equipment placement and clearances
  • Work with fabrication shops to resolve fabrication and assembly issues
  • Review and approve shop fabrication drawings and submittals
  • Provide technical support to production, quality assurance, and field service teams
  • Participate in design reviews and value engineering initiatives
  • Coordinate with procurement for material and equipment selection
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards (ASME, AISC, AWS welding codes)
  • NFPA, marine classification rules where applicable
  • Develop and maintain standard designs for common enclosure types and skid configurations
  • Identify opportunities for design optimization and cost reduction
  • Create standard details library for common connections and assemblies
  • Interface with customers to clarify dimensional requirements, site constraints, and installation conditions
  • Conduct site surveys to measure existing equipment and assess installation requirements
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs) when needed
  • Provide installation guidance and troubleshooting support to field teams
  • Travel domestically and occasionally internationally to support installations and commissioning (very rarely)

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Drafting Technology, CAD/Drafting, Mechanical Design Technology, or equivalent hands-on experience in a related field
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical design, preferably designing industrial equipment enclosures, skids, or structures
  • Demonstrated experience creating fabrication drawings for welded steel structures
  • Experience with sheet metal design and enclosure layout
  • Background in power generation equipment, electrical equipment housings, or industrial machinery (preferred)
  • Marine or mobile equipment design experience (advantageous)
  • CAD Software: Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks
  • Drawing Creation: Strong ability to create clear, detailed fabrication drawings with proper dimensioning, GD&T, and welding symbols
  • Structural Design: Practical knowledge of steel structure design, beam sizing, and connection details
  • Materials: Understanding of structural steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and sheet metal materials and fabrication processes
  • Piping and Plumbing: Basic knowledge of piping design, fittings, and layout
