The Duke Ellington School of the Arts and The Ellington Fund seek a strategic, experienced, and mission-driven
Director of Finance to lead and oversee the financial operations of two related 501(c)(3) organizations. This is a critical leadership role for a finance professional who thrives in a creative, fast-paced nonprofit environment and is committed to excellence in financial stewardship.The Director of Finance reports directly to the Principal/Head of Schools and partners closely with the Board Finance Committee to support organizational sustainability, compliance, and long-term financial strategy.

Key Responsibilities


  • Lead and manage all functions of the Finance Department
  • Oversee annual audit, tax return preparation/filings, and investment reporting
  • Prepare and present monthly and quarterly financial statements, including budget-to-actual reporting
  • Manage payroll processes and retirement contribution submissions
  • Direct annual budget development and long-range financial planning
  • Administer and monitor grants and contracts, ensuring compliance and accurate reporting
  • Serve as a strategic financial advisor to leadership and the Board Finance Committee

Primary Responsibilities


  • Prepare monthly financial statements with detailed supporting workpapers
  • Oversee cash flow management, forecasting, and liquidity planning
  • Maintain and monitor restricted funds, including intercompany and departmental reporting
  • Conduct detailed financial analyses to inform decision-making
  • Collaborate with development staff on grant and program financial reporting
  • Develop annual budgets for academic and arts departments
  • Perform monthly bank and investment reconciliations
  • Review and approve journal entries and accounts payable batches
  • Support the Principal/Head of Schools on administrative and financial matters

Qualifications


  • Extensive experience in nonprofit financial management
  • Strong knowledge of 501(c)(3) compliance, GAAP, and audit requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a collaborative, creative environment
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills

Job Requirements


  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive nonprofit finance and management experience
  • Active CPA or Certified Nonprofit Accounting Professional (CNAP) credential required
  • Proven experience working with Boards of Directors and senior leadership
  • Strong ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced setting
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting systems required; Financial Edge preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial analysis and strengthening internal controls
  • Prior experience managing and developing staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Flexible, solutions-oriented mindset with a commitment to professional excellence
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Knowledge of payroll, employee benefits, insurance, and regulatory compliance
