OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Business Development Officer – Allied Lines & Program Business is responsible for accelerating premium growth across MagMutual’s allied lines and program business by building a scalable and disciplined sales capability. This role focuses on maximizing cross-sell opportunities within MagMutual’s existing physician and hospital PolicyOwner base, expanding distribution through targeted broker and partner relationships, and developing a repeatable production infrastructure to support future business development officers as the platform scales.Working closely with underwriting, program leadership, and distribution/business development leadership, this individual will identify, develop, and convert new opportunities while maintaining alignment with underwriting profitability and company growth objectives.The role requires both direct production responsibility and the development of internal sales processes, KPIs, and pipeline management disciplines necessary to support long-term growth of allied lines and program business.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Strategic Sales Development
- Drive premium growth across MagMutual’s allied lines and program business through targeted cross-selling to existing physician and hospital PolicyOwners.
- Identify opportunities within the current PolicyOwner base to expand coverage relationships across additional lines of business.
- Develop and maintain a structured pipeline of new opportunities sourced through internal referrals, broker partners, and program relationships.
- Partner with underwriting leadership to align production strategy with underwriting appetite and profitability targets.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify emerging opportunities in healthcare services, provider organizations, and healthcare-adjacent industries.
Cross-Sell & PolicyOwner Engagement
- Build structured outreach programs targeting existing physician groups, hospitals, and healthcare organizations insured by MagMutual.
- Develop relationships with key PolicyOwner decision makers including executives, risk managers, and appointed brokers or MagMutual direct agents.
- Coordinate internally with underwriting, business development and client services to present the full MagMutual value proposition to PolicyOwners.
- Identify and pursue opportunities to bundle allied lines solutions alongside medical professional liability coverage.
Broker & Distribution Development
- Identify, appoint, and actively manage broker relationships that align with MagMutual’s allied lines and program business strategy.
- Develop relationships with specialty healthcare brokers, program administrators, and distribution partners capable of generating targeted submissions.
- Communicate underwriting appetite clearly to external partners and actively manage submission quality and flow.
- Create targeted broker engagement strategies focused on markets with high concentrations of healthcare services risk.
Sales Infrastructure & Production Management
- Develop and implement a scalable business development framework that supports consistent production growth.
- Establish and manage key sales metrics including:
- Pipeline development
- Quote-to-bind ratios
- Cross-sell penetration within existing PolicyOwners
- Broker productivity
- New program production
- Track and report production performance through defined KPIs and pipeline reporting processes.
- Work with leadership to implement tools and processes necessary to manage opportunity flow and sales activity.
Program Business Development
- Identify opportunities to build or expand program business across healthcare-related sectors.
- Work with underwriting and program leadership to evaluate potential program structures and distribution partners.
- Support the launch and growth of new program opportunities including broker onboarding and market introduction.
Sales Capability & Team Scaling
- Build the foundational processes and infrastructure necessary to scale the allied lines business development function.
- Document repeatable sales processes that can support the onboarding of additional Business Development Officers as production grows.
- Assist leadership in defining territories, roles, and responsibilities for future BDO hires.
- Provide market insight and production data to guide strategic hiring and expansion decisions.
Market Intelligence
- Maintain strong awareness of trends in healthcare services, physician practice operations, hospital systems, and healthcare-adjacent risk exposures.
- Monitor competitor activity and emerging market opportunities within allied healthcare sectors.
- Provide insights to leadership regarding potential product development or market expansion opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- College or graduate degree preferred.
- Professional insurance designations such as CPCU, CIC, or RPLU preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in commercial insurance sales, business development, or program distribution, ideally within healthcare or specialty insurance markets.
- Commercial/Specialty Lines experience: Workers Compensation, Cyber/Regulatory Liability, Financial Lines, GL or Umbrella in the healthcare space preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to build broker relationships and generate profitable new business.
- Experience developing structured sales pipelines and performance metrics.
- Strong strategic thinking and analytical capability with the ability to identify growth opportunities.
- Active P&C license including non-resident licensing as required.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills with executives, brokers, and healthcare leaders.
- Willingness to travel regularly.
