The Applied Meteorologist (GIS) will bridge the gap between atmospheric science and business intelligence, leveraging geospatial data to support high-level marketing and operational initiatives. This is not a standard GIS role; it requires experience in meteorology and a deep understanding of weather dynamics, with the ability to apply that knowledge to solve business problems. The ideal candidate will work closely with the Weather Communication Specialist to translate complex meteorological data into compelling, accuracy-driven narratives and visual products that drive decision-making for our clients and stakeholders.

Leadership Responsibilities:


•Assists the Weather Communication Specialist in organizing materials to support the GIS internship program, providing mentorship on the intersection of operational meteorology and geospatial analysis.

Duties/Responsibilities


•Operational Meteorology & Analysis: Assess, prepare, and deliver real-time and post-event analysis of extreme weather events (severe storms, tropical cyclones, winter weather) using ArcGIS Pro and AGOL to demonstrate business impacts. •Commercial Content Creation: Create and share engaging geospatial content using ArcGIS Experience Builder, StoryMaps, blogs, and social media platforms that communicate weather insights specifically for a business and public safety audience. •Product Support: Assist the Weather Communication Specialist in creating technically accurate marketing and sales enablement materials that demonstrate the value of Baron’s weather data to prospective clients. •Workflow Optimization: Identify meteorological workflows that can be automated (scripted) or improved to enhance the efficiency of the GIS team’s response to active weather.

Required Skills/Abilities


•Meteorological Expertise: Deep understanding of atmospheric thermodynamics, severe weather parameters, and radar interpretation, with the ability to explain these concepts to non-scientists. •Commercial Acumen: Demonstrated ability to apply weather data to business use cases (e.g., insurance, logistics, public safety, or media). GIS Proficiency: Advanced experience in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Experience Builder, specifically applied to meteorological datasets.•Technical Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills with a portfolio of writing or presentations geared toward business or operational audiences. •Scripting/Dev: Working knowledge of Python (ArcPy), Arcade, and JavaScript for customizing widgets and automating data ingest. •Agility: Ability to work under pressure during active weather events and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Education and Experience


•Bachelor’s degree in GIS, meteorology, atmospheric science, or related earth science.•At least two years of experience in commercial or operational meteorology with a heavy emphasis on geospatial analysis. Experience in a private-sector business environment is highly preferred over purely academic research roles.
