The opportunityAs an Automation Technician at Radical AI you will prototype, install, and maintain a suite of novel robotic and autonomous systems to drive a first of its kind material science research and discovery laboratory. The workcells integrate PLC-controlled systems, 6-axis industrial robots, linear motion, pneumatics, and both standard and custom electromechanical equipment. The Automation Technician works closely with automation engineers, materials scientists, and operations staff to ensure safe, reliable, and repeatable system performance.You will take ownership of building prototype and production designs of electro-mechanical equipment at the direction of the technical project lead as well as owning day to day lab equipment troubleshooting and preventative maintenance.
Mission
- Build prototype and production novel automation systems involving mechanical assembly and controls/PLC wiring based on direction and documentation from the technical system lead.
- Diagnose and repair lab automation equipment including I/O devices, sensors, actuators, 6-axis robots, control cabinets, and standard and custom electro-mechanical hardware components.
- Execute preventive and corrective maintenance activities to minimize downtime and improve system reliability.
- Perform validation testing on novel automation equipment.
- Collaborate with engineering and scientific teams during system modifications, experiments, and process development activities.
- Assist with installation, commissioning, and debugging of new or modified automation equipment and bring assembly or performance issues and potential solutions for the attention of the technical lead for review.
- Operate equipment including but not limited to drills, saws, 3D printers, waterjet, laser cutter and other manufacturing and fabrication tools.
- Champion the organization, cleanliness, and sustainment of lab, workshop, and assembly areas.
- Help shape the culture of the automation team by leading from the front and demonstrating a disciplined sense of organization, eye for detail, and an impeccable level of polish and craftsmanship.
- Bring an attitude of collaboration and open-mindedness, to facilitate fearless and creative problem solving that empowers our team to ship world class technology at an unprecedented speed.
About you
- Technical degree, or equivalent hands-on experience in automation, mechatronics, or industrial maintenance.
- Strong electromechanical troubleshooting skills using schematics, manuals, and diagnostic tools.
- Experience with PLC-based industrial automation systems.
- Fabrication and assembly skills in building electro-mechanical systems.
- Working knowledge of industrial safety systems and safe work practices.
- Ability to work independently in a hands-on, development-oriented environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across engineering and scientific disciplines.
Pluses
- Experience with software (PLC logic and/or Python) which may be used for advanced troubleshooting or creating internal test equipment.
- Background supporting custom, prototype, or research-grade automation equipment.
- Exposure to materials processing, metallurgy, powder handling, or thermal systems
- Familiarity with industrial networking, HMIs, or basic data collection systems.
