CPower is a leading Virtual Power Plant platform, monetizing the value of customer-sited energy to intelligently strengthen the grid. For over a decade, we’ve made turning flexible energy into revenue simple for partners and large energy users such as businesses, manufacturers, public institutions and healthcare organizations, delivering over $1.2 billion from demand response and energy flexibility programs to customers since 2015. With 6.7 GW of customer capacity nearly 23,000 sites, we’re empowering energy users across North America, enabling them to benefit from an innovative energy economy. We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Scientist to join our growing Product team.
Your primary, initial responsibility will be to enable new use cases, programs and constraints to be applied to a MILP-based optimization engine, and to monitor and improve optimization accuracy for existing use cases. This will require administering optimization accuracy reports for each customer site (i.e., KPI reporting) to identify and articulate the causes of any accuracy issues; and identifying, testing, and proposing potential changes to the product that address the causes of any accuracy issues. The role may require adding alternative optimization approaches that achieve desired business goals, as well as standing up new optimization services or forecasting functions as required.
Based on candidate location, our primary preference is a hybrid role requiring in-office presence at our Baltimore, MD or New York City location three days per week (Tues/Wed/Thurs). Our secondary preference is remote.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
You will work closely with product business owner, technical product management, and software engineers, and will focus on these topics:
- Identify, prototype, and implement enhancements on the core optimization approach, which includes:
- Implementing changes or enhancements to the core data model and problem modelling as requested by the business owner and product manager.
- Supporting integration efforts between the optimization platform and the solver to scale new features.
- Benchmarking performance across various program stacks, load profiles, locations, and other key variables.
- Integrating robust test coverage covering new and existing optimization logic.
- Identifying methods to proactively flag anomalies before they impact end customers.
- Collaborate with the team to assess how optimization and forecasting can be adjusted for various economic objectives.
- Administer and review optimization accuracy reports for each site and identify and articulate the causes of any accuracy issues, including:
- Identify, test, and propose potential changes to the product that address the causes of any identified accuracy issues.
- Identify drivers and trends in market price spikes and propose bidding strategies that can better optimize asset utilization.
- Support the business case for prioritizing scope items by quantifying the incremental benefit of code changes.
- Work with the Product team to identify new and value-add data science-led or -supported opportunities.
- Leverage existing CPower data sources and identify new sources for external data to drive higher accuracy outcomes.
- Work collaboratively in a diverse environment. We commit to reaching better decisions by respecting opinions and working through disagreements.
- Gain in-depth experience in an exciting industry as you work with energy financial models, energy tariffs, Distributed Energy Resource (DER) controls & monitoring, and other topics in the energy sector.
- Opportunity to build and lead a data science practice at CPower over time.
We are looking for a motivated self-starter that thrives in a dynamic environment. A strong work ethic and excellent problem-solving skills are equally important as being a team player who enjoys learning and teaching.

- 7+ years of experience in data science or related field.
- 2-5 years of specific experience working on MILP-based optimization problems [professional preferred, academic acceptable].
- Experience building or leading a data science practice within an organization with evidence of successful technical and human resource development in the practice.
- Fluency and demonstrated success in Python and Pyomo.
- Demonstrated success leveraging multiple mixed-integer nonlinear optimization techniques.
- Understanding of machine learning algorithms (time series forecasting, clustering algorithms, probabilistic models, supervised and unsupervised learning).
- Experience developing solutions using model predictive controls.
- Experience with time series analysis and forecasting (LSTM, ARIMA, GARCH).
- Advanced skills with one or more data analysis tools, to be specified in applicant’s response.
- Experience working with Agile development teams.
- Familiarity with electricity markets, utility tariffs, and interval data.
- Understanding of the operational attributes and constraints of DER assets like batteries, solar, and back-up generation.
- Skill in working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, communicating with and managing expectations with stakeholders and product resources.
- All applicants must be able to provide documentation that they are legally eligible to work in the United States for an extended period, and will not now, or in the future, require sponsorship for employment visa status to work legally for our Company in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
