As a Senior Mechatronics Engineer, you will join our Design & Mechatronics team onsite in our Carson, CA office to explore, develop and test novel systems in house for implementation in the field.
Role & Responsibilities
- Controls Engineering: Strong foundation in fundamental control concepts, including PID, deadband, and frequency response analysis (e.g., Bode plots).
- Motor and Drive Systems: Strong understanding of electric motors and motor control systems (PID Tuning).
- Debugging and Lab Instrument: Robust debugging skills and hands-on familiarity with standard lab test instruments (multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies).
- Mechanical Design & Prototyping: Experience with mechanical design (CAD, technical drawings) and rapid prototyping techniques (3D printing, laser cutting, basic machine shop operations).
- Industrial Electronics: Experience with industrial automation electronics, including PLCs, functional safety modules, sensors, and actuators.
- Power Electronics Experience: Practical experience with power electronics applications, such as motor drives, switching power supplies, and industrial machinery.
- Hardware Certification Standards: Applied knowledge of applicable hardware certification standards and best design practices (e.g., IPC, FCC, UL, CE).
- Embedded Systems Programming: Proficiency in embedded C/C++ and Python, with experience in embedded programming.
- PLC and Logic Programming: Basic knowledge of PLC programming, debugging, and general logic programming.
- System Design & Review: Develop and/or review designs for new robotic and automation systems.
- Part Design and Sourcing: Design parts and components for robotic systems and own the selection of electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic hardware.
- DFM Prototyping: Prototype designs, emphasizing Design for Manufacturability (DFM), utilizing tools like 3D printers.
- Testing and Validation: Conduct robust testing and validation on developed systems to ensure reliability and performance.
- System Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot and test developed automation systems, including PLC-based systems.
- Collaboration: Collaborate cross-functionally with internal and external teams to understand customer requirements, ensure project feasibility, and coordinate material procurement for in-house testing prior to deployment.
- Product Improvement: Collaborate with internal teams to improve product designs, utilizing Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles, particularly for End-of-Arm Tooling (EOAT).
- PLC System Standardization: Apply knowledge of PLC hardware to upgrade and standardize systems within robotic cells.
- Mentorship: Lead, mentor, and actively develop junior talent.
Minimum Qualifications
- BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
- 5+ years working proficiency with CAD programs, hands-on prototyping, fabrication or ability to design for 3D printing
- Basic programming knowledge in C++, Python, or similar languages
- Proven track record of strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams and customers
- Willingness to work at early stage company with dynamic priorities
- Ability to quickly problem solve and work autonomously with little or no supervision
- Ability to solve technical problems effectively, efficiently, and independently
Preferred Qualifications
- Deep understanding of ROS or Linux
- Experience with industrial robots and 6 DOF robotic arms
- Experience working in customer-facing roles communicating technical subjects to a non-technical audience
- Demonstrated experience with 3D solid modeling, analysis, and development of 2D manufacturing drawings
- Experience machining, rapid prototyping and fabrication processes/materials to meet functional design requirements
- Familiar with industrial facilities and equipment
