We are looking for a Staff Propulsion Test Engineer to join our team. At Wisk, You will be part of the Propulsion Test Team in the Propulsion IPT, responsible for developing, building, and deploying critical test rigs for aircraft electric motor development. Propulsion Test is a multi-disciplinary team with exposure to mechanical, electrical, controls, and data analysis, supporting verification, validation, and acceptance testing.In this role you will collaborate with teams across the organization, to identify necessary test infrastructure to support propulsion system development.
You will leverage internal and external resources to conceptualize, design, analyze, and build test rigs for HV controllers, electric motors, and propellers. You will work in a laboratory environment, splitting time between working at a desk and supporting builds on the shop floor. As a staff level engineer, you will lead design projects, test campaigns, and mentor junior teammates. Due to the nature of the work required for this position, this is an onsite opportunity. You will be required to work from our Fremont, CA office.What you will do:
- Work closely with Systems, Certification, and Design to understand and draft requirements for short and long term test infrastructure needs
- Leverage design and MCAD/ECAD experience to create 3D models and drawings for static and dynamic components, harnessing, and fixtures
- Analyze test rig designs for mechanical (stress, stiffness, thermal) and electrical (safety, grounding, EMC) attributes and optimize for test
- Create detailed, release ready documentation for systems architectures, MBOM/EBOM, and test procedures
- Assist in planning, commissioning, and executing test campaigns for subsystem/system/aircraft level efforts
- Process, visualize, and analyze test data using Matlab or Python.
- Design measurement and control flows in Labview
- Be proactive in creating a safe work environment, addressing safety concerns and promoting an accountable safety culture
Requirements
- B.S. in a relevant engineering discipline (Mechanical/Electrical/Aero) with at least 8 years of experience in the integration, design, and test of electric propulsion systems in a startup or advanced technical environment
- You have worked in the Aerospace/Automotive/Robotics industries, with a focus on lab based testing in controller test beds, dynamometers, wind tunnels, and motor stands.
- Have a firm grasp of test processes and best practices, and the different methods of testing from a systems aspect (verification/validation/production)
- You have hands-on experience working in a laboratory environment, utilizing hand and machine tools to fabricate parts
- Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD (NX Preferred) and FEM (Simcenter Preferred), and exposure to manufacturing methods, drawing standards, and GD&T
- Expertise and ability to communicate at a design level in 1 or more areas: vibration, fluids, thermal, static structural, signals analysis, controls, EMI/EMC
Desired
- Direct experience with electric aviation development and/or FAA type certification, including conformity or certification testing
- Experience in Labview RT, monitor/control, and communication protocols (MODBUS, SCPI, RS). Bonus points if expert level user around FPGA builds, git repository ownership, and revision/release control
- Experience working with project management tools (JIRA, MS project)
