mdg, A Freeman Company is a marketing agency with head, heart and a passion for what we do – delivering measurable results for live event clients in diverse categories like education, healthcare, technology, alternative energy, gummy bears, woodfired pizza, and craft beer (we’ll explain those last three later). Our creative team is seeking an Associate Creative Director who will play a key role in bringing bold ideas to life and supporting the creative vision that shapes the future of mdg. More than a graphic designer, this person will help develop and execute creative concepts, leverage new technology in the design process, and collaborate closely with designers and copywriters to ensure work meets the highest standards.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, embrace learning the nuances of multiple clients and industries, and contribute to holistic campaigns that drive measurable results. This role will partner with the Creative Director and leadership team to maintain consistency across projects, provide guidance to the creative team, and ensure deliverables align with client objectives. While not the primary decision-maker, the Associate Creative Director will influence creative direction, mentor team members, and occasionally roll up their sleeves to produce design work when needed. Responsibilities:

  • Lead the creative concepting process within your circle. Translate complex strategies and ideas into compelling creative executions
  • Serve as a strategic creative advisor and key relationship manager within your circle, helping establish strategic direction and executing best-in-class creative
  • Understand the business needs of clients and translate those needs into creative solutions
  • Provide quality control across all creative outputs, regularly reviewing deliverables to ensure they meet the highest standards of excellence and brand consistency. Intervene proactively to guide teams and adjust creative direction as needed to maintain alignment with client objectives and project goals.
  • Working alongside your circle’s ops lead, prioritize design and copy workflow and delegate responsibilities, assess bandwidth and resources and work to best align projects based on strengths, skill levels and budgets
  • Participate in new business pitches, concept/brand identity/design execution presentations, as well as initial campaign kick-off meetings with clients
  • Perform, and assist the design team in performing, consistent, high-quality design work for print and digital communications while working on simultaneous projects and meeting deadlines
  • Evaluate budgets versus actual time and hard costs spent on various design and copy projects within your circle to identify and maximize efficiencies and profitability
  • Ensure team is hitting billability and utilization goals
  • Instill a passion for collaboration, trust and teamwork
  • Mentor junior members of the design team, offering guidance and learning opportunities to ensure that they are growing professionally and consistently producing quality and effective work.
  • Perform managerial duties related to his/her team including: addressing employee concerns and performance issues; reviewing work; approving time sheets and paid time off, out of office requests; conducting employee reviews; and facilitating professional development
  • Stay current with emerging design trends, techniques, technologies, and tools, integrating innovative approaches into creative processes to maintain a competitive edge and drive agency-wide improvements

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of broad digital design experience (including online media, motion graphics and video) is required
  • Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts, Media Arts, Interaction Design is strongly preferred
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong conceptual skills for advertising and marketing campaigns encompassing high level digital components and knowledge of design fundamentals is required
  • Previous experience in an agency setting is preferred but not required
  • High-level graphic production skills are required
  • Ability to produce quality work amidst short development cycles and shifting priorities is required
  • Experience in integrated marketing, branding and visual design
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma is required
