This is a key role for the European Finance function, responsible for ensuring compliant and accurate accounting under IFRS, Portuguese GAAP, and US GAAP bridge reporting.The ideal candidate will have a Big 4 background and experience in auditing or preparing financial statements for regulated entities (financial services, fintech, or payments).You’ll work closely with both local accounting partners and Uphold’s global finance team, playing a key role in maintaining reliable financial information, strengthening internal controls, and helping build a scalable accounting framework that supports Uphold’s growth across Europe.What you'll be doing primarily:
- Take ownership of the month-end and year-end close process, ensuring all journal entries, reconciliations, and reports are completed accurately and on time.
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations for key accounts, investigating and resolving variances promptly.
- Work closely with local accounting partners and auditors to ensure statutory compliance and accurate financial statements under local GAAP and IFRS
- Prepare financial information and reports required by local regulators and authorities, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely submission.
- Oversee and execute Accounts Payable (AP) activities, including vendor invoices, employee expenses, and payments, ensuring proper controls and documentation.
- Collaborate with the global Finance & Accounting team to align accounting data with group reporting and support consolidation.
- Partner with Engineering and Finance Operations to automate manual accounting tasks, improve accuracy, and streamline workflows.
- Support tax and compliance processes by preparing required information and ensuring deadlines are met.
- Participate in financial risk assessment and control reviews, maintaining strong internal control over accounting processes.
- Create and maintain clear documentation of accounting procedures and controls, ensuring standardization across entities.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives, suggesting better tools, automation, and best practices for the team.
- Uphold confidentiality and integrity in all financial and operational matters.
Required Qualifications:
- Certified Accountant (“Contabilista Certificado”) in Portugal.
- 8–10 years of experience, including Big 4 audit background (financial services clients preferred).
- Strong technical knowledge of Portuguese GAAP and solid understanding of IFRS.
- Proven experience managing month-end close, audits, and external accounting providers.
- Experience with ERP systems (NetSuite preferred) and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Good communication skills and a collaborative attitude.
- Fluent in English (Portuguese required).
