Role Overview
The
2nd Look Credit Specialist
plays a crucial role in turning declined applications into approved solutions. When a homeowner’s initial financing is declined, this specialist steps in to find creative alternatives—whether that’s navigating specialized “bad credit” lending partners, exploring secondary financing programs, or helping homeowners leverage personal resources such as retirement savings (401k, IRA), home equity, or other viable payment methods. This role requires both financial expertise and empathy: balancing knowledge of credit-challenged lending with the ability to guide homeowners through sensitive conversations about urgent home needs.
Key Responsibilities
Review and analyze declined financing applications to identify opportunities for approval through alternate lenders, subprime programs, or personal financial pathways. Maintain deep knowledge of the bad credit space, including second-look lenders, specialized consumer finance programs, and approval criteria. Educate and advise homeowners on alternative funding options, such as: Secondary loan programs (subprime, personal loans, credit unions, fintech options) Retirement or savings account (401k loan/withdrawal, IRA distribution rules) Home equity solutions, cash-out refinance, or co-applicants Partner with the Sales Team and Lending Analysts to save deals that would otherwise be lost, ensuring homeowners still complete their remodeling projects. Document findings, approvals, and next steps clearly in CRM and lending systems for transparency and compliance. Build and maintain strong relationships with lending partners to stay current on evolving products and underwriting guidelines. Act as a subject matter expert on credit-challenged homeowners, coaching the team on best practices.
Qualifications
2+ years in consumer lending, finance, mortgage, or home improvement financing. Strong knowledge of credit score impact, subprime/2nd look programs, and creative funding strategies. Comfortable navigating conversations around sensitive financial situations. Excellent communication skills—able to build trust with homeowners and sales teams. Problem-solver with persistence to “find a way to yes.” Familiarity with retirement accounts, personal loan processes, and credit union financing a plus. CRM or finance platform experience preferred.
