Full-timeDescriptionThe Atlanta Botanical Garden seeks a highly skilled and organized Conservation Genetics Laboratory Manager to support the research and applied conservation mission of the Southeastern Center for Conservation (SECC). This position is responsible for managing the daily operations of the Conservation Genetics Laboratory, overseeing the curation of the Conservation DNA Biorepository, and performing molecular laboratory work to advance conservation genetics projects focused on imperiled plant species.Working under the supervision of the Research Scientist, Genetics, the Laboratory Manager ensures smooth lab operations, high-quality data generation, compliance with safety and data standards, and effective integration of genetics research into conservation strategies across the SECC team.

This position also plays a key role in training and mentoring laboratory technicians, trainees, and volunteers and fostering a culture of learning, safety, and collaboration within the laboratory environment. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Laboratory Management & Operations: Oversee daily functioning of the Conservation Genetics Laboratory, ensuring a safe, well-organized, and efficient research environment. Maintain laboratory equipment, track inventory, order supplies, and implement chemical and biological safety protocols. Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for molecular workflows and safety practices
  • Biorepository Curation: Manage sample receipt, accessioning, labeling, and storage in the Conservation DNA Repository. Support field staff and collaborators by coordinating collection and processing of tissue samples for genetic research for the Conservation DNA Biorepository
  • Molecular Laboratory Work: Perform DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, Illumina library preparation, and coordinate with external sequencing facilities
  • Data & Project Support: Maintain accurate records of laboratory procedures, sample metadata, and project datasets in shared databases. Assist with population genetics analyses by organizing data for downstream bioinformatics and statistical workflows. Summarize findings for project reports, grant deliverables, and manuscripts
  • Training, Mentorship, & Outreach: Train and mentor technicians, volunteers, and trainees on lab techniques and best practices. Support staff development by leading orientations, safety training, and technique demonstrations. Lead tours of the Conservation Genetics Laboratory for a variety of audiences
  • Collaboration & Integration: Collaborate closely with the Research Scientist, Genetics to execute project goals and integrate genetic data into conservation decision-making. Communicate research findings to partners, conservation professionals, and scientists through academic and conservation conferences
  • Administrative & Budget Support: Track laboratory expenditures and assist with budget planning. Provide data and documentation for grant reports, publications, and donor communications. Support compliance with guidelines for research integrity and safety

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master’s degree in genetics, molecular biology, plant biology, conservation biology, or related field with a minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a molecular biology or genetics research laboratory OR Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 4 years’ experience
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills, with ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License
  • Preferred: Experience with population genetics, genomics, or conservation genetics research. Experience training students, volunteers, or staff
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. A strong desire to work on a team is required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Ability to spend extended periods conducting laboratory procedures and working with fine instruments
  • Ability to navigate multiple projects and maintain high attention to detail
  • Manual dexterity, visual acuity, and adherence to safety protocols are essential
  • Some regional and international travel will be required
  • Occasional field work may be required
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lb
