HONK is transforming the way parking operates across North America by enabling municipalities, universities, and private operators to eliminate physical payment infrastructure and transition to digital parking permits. Our innovative platform addresses the diverse challenges faced by parking operators, allowing them to focus on their core business. With hundreds of millions of payments processed per year, HONK is dedicated to product velocity and technological excellence.
Role Overview
We are looking for a pragmatic and proactive Intermediate DevOps Engineer to join our growing Engineering team. We value Agile principles without the heavy process, bias toward simplicity, and expect everyone to take ownership. You’ll report to (and partner closely with) our Senior DevOps Engineer to keep our platform simple, efficient, and automated as we scale a payments system processing $200M+ annually.Current stack: AWS, Terraform for IaC, CircleCI for CI/CD, Docker on Amazon ECS, and RDS with an active migration to Amazon Aurora.Roughly 25% of this role is compliance and security operations.
You’ll be a key player in maintaining a first-class security posture at HONK (SOC 2 and PCI DSS Level 1 audits), in partnership with our Senior DevOps Engineer.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and operate AWS infrastructure with Terraform (clean, modular, reviewable code).
- Own and improve CircleCI pipelines for fast, reliable, low‑toil deployments.
- Run containerized services on ECS: task/service definitions, autoscaling, deployments, health checks, and IAM roles for tasks.
- Implement practical guardrails: least‑privilege IAM, secrets management, encryption in transit/at rest, backups, and DR testing.
- Drive observability (logs, metrics, alerts) and reduce toil through automation and concise runbooks.
- Support database reliability and performance; contribute to our RDS → Aurora migration (testing, backups/restore, parameter tuning, failover/DR readiness).
- Participate in incident response and post‑incident reviews; turn findings into simple, automated improvements.
- Collaborate with the Senior DevOps Engineer; share knowledge, anticipate issues, and favour the simplest solution that works.
- Compliance (~25%): run recurring controls, maintain audit evidence, manage access reviews and change‑management records, liaise with auditors, and track remediation for SOC 2 and PCI Level 1 audits.
Qualifications
- 3+ years in DevOps/SRE/platform roles (we care more about capability than exact years).
- Proficient across core AWS services (networking, IAM, storage, compute) and production operations.
- Adept with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) for reliable, maintainable infrastructure.
- Self‑motivated, disciplined, and passionate about your craft; comfortable with high autonomy and ownership.
- Experienced with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Amazon ECS) for scalable, efficient deployments.
- Strong with CI/CD in a continuous delivery environment.
- Comfortable owning compliance operations for SOC 2 and PCI DSS Level 1 (controls, evidence, auditor coordination).
- Clear and excellent communicator who writes concise docs and runbooks.
- Pragmatic problem solver who prefers simple over clever and automation over repetition.
Bonus Points
- Experience deploying Ruby on Rails applications.
- Aurora operations at scale or prior RDS→Aurora migrations.
- Cost, reliability, or deployment‑frequency wins you can quantify.
- Proficiency in bash, python & go.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: $110,000 – $120,000 CAD, commensurate with experience and location.
- Work Environment: Hybrid/remote‑friendly with flexibility to work outside of the country for short periods each year.
- Benefits Package: Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage; paid vacation and personal days.
