Role:
As a SENIOR DATABASE ENGINEER, you will be responsible for designing, managing, optimizing, and securing our database infrastructure across PostgreSQL, MySQL, and AWS cloud environments. You will play a critical role in ensuring database reliability, scalability, and performance while implementing high availability, disaster recovery, and automation strategies. The ideal candidate has deep expertise in database internals, cloud-native architectures, and thrives in a fast-paced FinTech environment.

Responsibilities:
The essential responsibilities and duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Install, configure, and manage PostgreSQL and MySQL databases in production and non-production environments, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
- Perform advanced database tuning, indexing strategies, query optimization, and partitioning for high-performance transaction processing.
- Design and implement high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) strategies including streaming replication, clustering, and connection pooling solutions.
- Deploy and manage databases on Amazon RDS, Aurora (PostgreSQL/MySQL), and EC2-based instances with a focus on scalability and cost optimization.
- Implement infrastructure as code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, or AWS CDK for automated database provisioning and management.
- Enforce database security best practices including SSL/TLS, IAM authentication, data encryption at rest and in transit, and access controls to comply with financial industry standards (SOC2, PCI-DSS).
- Set up comprehensive database monitoring and alerting using AWS CloudWatch, Datadog, or similar tools to proactively identify and resolve issues.
- Configure and maintain backup strategies including WAL archiving, Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR), and automated snapshots with regular validation testing.
- Collaborate with DevOps, application development, and security teams to ensure database best practices and optimal application performance.
- Lead database migration projects, upgrades, and patches with minimal downtime in a 24/7 operational environment.
- Provide on-call support for critical database issues and participate in incident response and root cause analysis.
- Document database procedures, configurations, architecture designs, and create knowledge base articles for the team.
- Mentor junior database administrators and provide technical guidance to development teams on database design and optimization.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of database administration experience with at least 5 years in PostgreSQL and MySQL production environments.
- Required: Expert-level knowledge of both PostgreSQL and MySQL architecture, replication, performance tuning, and administration.
- Extensive AWS cloud experience, including Amazon RDS, Aurora (PostgreSQL/MySQL), and EC2-based database deployments.
- Strong proficiency in SQL, PL/pgSQL, stored procedures, and performance tuning tools (EXPLAIN ANALYZE, pg_stat_statements, MySQL Performance Schema).
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.
- Demonstrated ability to write automation scripts in Bash, Python, or similar languages.
- Experience with database security, backup strategies, disaster recovery, and regulatory compliance in financial services.
- Strong knowledge of monitoring tools like AWS CloudWatch, Datadog, New Relic, or similar platforms.
- AWS Certified Database – Specialty or AWS Solutions Architect certification highly desirable.
- Experience with containerized database deployments (Docker, Kubernetes/EKS) is a plus.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for database changes using tools like Flyway or Liquibase preferred.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex database issues under pressure.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across teams and with stakeholders at all levels.
