Primary Function:
The Machine Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and fabricating custom machines and equipment to support the production of unique composite parts and assemblies. This role involves working with a dynamic team to translate customer functional requirements into innovative machine architectures and processes that enhance proprietary manufacturing capabilities.
Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:
- Develop mechanical and machine design concepts to meet customer and internal needs and translate them into functional and efficient manufacturing systems.
- Work with teammates, management and other groups to fully understand and meet or exceed customers’ requirements.
- Develop and perform machine system testing to ensure capability, robustness and reliability.
- Coordinate with vendors and internal machine shop to procure system parts on schedule.
- Participate in continuous of improvements to machines and processes.
- Develop and maintain clear and accurate machine documentation: requirements, plans, drawings, solid models, analyses, BOMs, operating instructions and required operator training.
- Apply a resourceful hands-on approach using a wide range of fabrication methods, materials and mechanical equipment.
- Interact positively and effectively with others to achieve goals.
- Lead, guide or coordinate the efforts of teammates when required.
Education and Experience: (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required
- Minimum of 3 years experience in the composites industry with a focus on customer service, sales and marketing.
- Can demonstrate exceptional solid modeling skills in Catia or SolidWorks.
- Able to competently perform engineering analysis by hand, computer based and FEA.
- History of creative design with examples of past innovation on complex machines.
- Skilled in hands-on fabrication of tooling, jigs, fixtures and industrial equipment.
- Possess a deep understanding of reliable and robust machine design principles.
- Knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering principles
- Software development such as PLC programming or imbedded firmware is a plus.
- Experience in composite design, analysis and tooling a plus.
- ITAR - Permanent resident of the United States (“U.S. person” as defined by ITAR)
- Background and drug screen - pass a post-offer background verification and drug screen.
Work Environment
Standard office environment with normal amounts of office related conditions. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients, or suppliers.
