Mid-Level Cartographer
Position Summary
The Mid-Level Cartographer will design, produce, and maintain high-quality maps and other geospatial products to support operational and analytical needs. This role will work with geospatial datasets from multiple sources, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with cartographic standards. The incumbent will collaborate with analysts, scientists, and other stakeholders to visualize complex geospatial data for decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, edit, and maintain cartographic products using GIS and design software.
- Ensure maps and geospatial visualizations meet quality, accuracy, and style standards.
- Translate raw geospatial data into clear, visually compelling maps and infographics.
- Support the integration of spatial data from various sources into map products.
- Collaborate with analysts and scientists to meet mission-specific mapping requirements.
- Maintain and update cartographic templates, symbology, and metadata.
- Perform QA/QC checks on spatial data prior to publication.
- Assist with the preparation of briefing materials, reports, and presentations.
- Stay informed on emerging cartographic technologies and best practices.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal geospatial and accessibility standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, GIS, or related field.
- 5+ years of professional experience in cartographic production and GIS.
- 9+ years of professional experience in cartographic production and GIS without a degree.
- Proficiency with Esri ArcGIS Pro, Adobe Illustrator, and related design tools.
- Strong understanding of cartographic principles, symbology, and spatial data standards.
- Ability to manage multiple mapping projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Excellent attention to detail and quality control practices.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance as required by the program.
Desired Skills
- Experience with web mapping platforms and interactive map design.
- Knowledge of remote sensing imagery interpretation.
- Familiarity with Python or other scripting languages for map automation.
- Experience in federal or government geospatial programs.
- Ability to create 3D visualizations and advanced cartographic effects.
- Strong portfolio of cartographic work demonstrating creativity and technical skill.
