Position: Hybrid in Office Tuesday - Thursday
What you will be doing
- Evaluate Field Surveys & Data Collection:
- Compile the provided site survey information to assess topography, utility placements, right-of-way conditions, and potential obstacles.
- Gather accurate field data using GPS and mapping tools for network planning and design.
- Evaluate complex site conditions and recommend appropriate solutions for OSP fiber installation.
- Network Design:
- Develop detailed designs for OSP projects, including both aerial and underground fiber optic cable.
- Utilize CAD, GIS, and other design tools to create construction drawings, route layouts, and splice MOPs.
- Prepare bills of materials, cost estimates, and construction documentation.
- Review and approve designs created by OSP Designer I and engineering technicians, ensuring they meet company standards.
- Project Management & Coordination:
- Oversee the execution of OSP projects to be Designed.
- Track project progress, manage change orders, and report status updates to senior management.
- Regulatory Compliance & Permitting:
- Prepare / assist CAD documents for permit applications for OSP construction activities, ensuring all work complies with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., NESC, NEC).
- Ensure that OSP designs adhere to industry standards and safety regulations.
- Maintain knowledge of evolving regulatory requirements and ensure all designs are up to date.
- Quality Control:
- Conduct quality control checks on completed OSP engineering designs and specifications, splice MOPs
- Document any deviations from the design and suggest corrective actions as needed.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship:
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to OSP Designer I and technicians, helping them improve their design and fieldwork skills.
- Review the work of junior engineers for accuracy and compliance with design and regulatory standards.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for more complex or challenging tasks.
Job Environment
The OSP Designer II is responsible for designing, planning, and overseeing the implementation of outside plant (OSP) telecommunications networks. This mid-level engineering position requires a solid understanding of OSP principles and skills. The OSP Designer II is involved in all phases of network projects, from collaborating field surveys and preparing detailed designs. This role also entails mentoring junior Designers and providing technical guidance to field teams.Expect to work in a dynamic environment where priorities and duties may shift quickly.
The ideal candidate for this position is expected to show eagerness to learn and grow to enhance skills and career goals.** Job duties and responsibilities may be shifted as needed by Management to meet the needs of the business
What you will need
- Strong understanding of OSP network design, including fiber optic and copper cable systems.
- Proficiency with CAD, GIS, and other design/mapping tools.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, engineering drawings, and network schematics.
- Solid project management skills, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams
- 2-3 years of experience in telecommunications, construction, or engineering support preferred.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in telecommunications, electrical engineering, or a related field is preferred. Associate’s degree with relevant experience may be considered.
