Position Description:
The Level II Modeling, Simulation, and Controls Engineer supports the development and analysis of control systems and high-fidelity models across propulsion and aerospace applications. This role provides hands-on experience in algorithm development, simulation architecture, and physics-based modeling, with a focus on learning and applying best practices in support of program and customer needs. The engineer contributes under the direction of senior technical staff and participates in cross-functional teams to support system-level objectives.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing models and simulations of dynamic aerospace systems, including propulsion and control
- Contribute to the design and validation of control algorithms for flight and propulsion systems
- Support simulation architecture development for design studies, V&V, and hardware integration
- Assist in generating and refining system and subsystem requirements by analyzing customer specifications, participating in design reviews, and collaborating with senior engineers
- Perform controllability assessments under supervision, including time and frequency domain analysis
- Support gain tuning and controller integration for various control system topologies
- Assist in conducting system-level performance analyses such as sensitivity studies and Monte Carlo simulations
- Support development of physics-based models representing mechanical, thermal, and aerodynamic behaviors
- Assist with ballistics modeling and propulsion performance analysis tasks for solid rocket motor systems
- Support modeling and simulation of actuation systems for propulsion control applications, including data analysis and integration into control system simulations under supervision.
- Support creation and application of estimation and filtering techniques under supervision
- Learn and apply modern control strategies, including state-space methods, in simulation tasks
- Contribute to modeling and simulation efforts tied to propulsion concept evaluation and development
- Participate in internal technical reviews, design walkthroughs, and documentation preparation
- Collaborate with engineers across GNC, software, test, and systems teams
- Document modeling approaches, assumptions, and results in technical reports and interface documents
- Ensure modeling and simulation artifacts meet configuration, traceability, and verification standards
Requirements:
- U.S. citizenship required due to government program requirements
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to engineering tasks across system development lifecycle
- Strong systems thinking and eagerness to work across disciplines and technical domains
- Foundational knowledge in modeling, control systems, and dynamic system behavior
- Strong interest in growing technical skills in aerospace applications
- Willingness to collaborate with senior engineers, participate in reviews, and receive mentorship
- Commitment to technical accuracy, quality, and continuous improvement
- Effective communicator with attention to technical detail and stakeholder engagement
Experience:
- 2–4 years of experience in modeling and simulation, control system development, or system dynamics
- Hands-on experience with simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or Python for modeling control systems
- Familiarity with propulsion system dynamics, especially solid rocket motors or controllable solids, is a plus
- Prior work with system integration or controls validation in lab or test environments preferred
- Experience working on or supporting government or defense programs is a plus
Education
:
- Required: Bachelor’s degree in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical, electrical engineering, or related STEM field from an accredited college/university
- Preferred: Master’s degree in systems engineering or a related discipline is desirable and may substitute for 1 year of experience from an accredited college/university
Skills
:
- Working proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or similar tools for control and simulation
- Understanding of classical control techniques (PID, lead-lag, Bode/Root Locus methods)
- Exposure to state-space modeling and estimation methods
- Ability to interpret and contribute to SysML diagrams of product structure, behavior, and engineering process
- Strong analytical and debugging skills in a model-based design environment
- Clear communicator who can write and present technical content effectively
- Eagerness to learn from senior team members and grow within the modeling and simulation discipline

Salary Range: $78,209 - $120,502
