Staff/Principal Backend Engineer (Node.js)

TLNT BridgeCanadaRemote

About the Role

As a Staff/Principal Backend Developer, you'll play a key strategic and technical leadership role within a collaborative, cross-functional team. You’ll drive the design and evolution of complex backend systems that power mission-critical, customer-facing applications. Beyond implementation, you’ll help shape architectural standards, mentor engineers, and influence product and platform decisions. We operate in a Kanban environment with a strong emphasis on clean architecture, observability, and system performance at scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and develop scalable, high-performance backend services using Node.js, with occasional use of Python for data-centric processes
  • Lead the design of event-driven systems with robust observability using DataDog, and advocate for architectural patterns that support reliability and performance
  • Own and evolve CI/CD pipelines to enable safe, frequent deployments (e.g., Blue-Green or Canary strategies)
  • Guide infrastructure design and improvements using Kubernetes, Helm, and Terraform on GCP
  • Optimize and scale MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis databases to ensure reliability, consistency, and low latency at high volumes
  • Collaborate across remote and in-office teams to align backend architecture with product direction
  • Communicate technical vision and complex concepts clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Provide mentorship to senior and intermediate engineers, promoting engineering best practices and continuous improvement

What We’re Looking For

  • Deep expertise in Node.js, MySQL, and designing event-driven architectures
  • Strong experience deploying production systems to cloud environments, ideally GCP, using Kubernetes and Terraform
  • Proven ability to manage, scale, and tune MongoDB and Redis in production
  • Expert understanding of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing strategies, and observability tools
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence engineering and product direction
  • Track record of technical mentorship, leading design reviews, and setting high-quality coding standards
  • (Bonus) Familiarity with front-end technologies like React is a plus

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Strategic ownership of systems that impact startups and real-world businesses
  • Flexible hybrid work environment and open, low-bureaucracy culture
  • Opportunity to shape both technical vision and team growth
  • Strong investment in continuous learning, experimentation, and personal development
  • Vacation policies and real time-off practices that support true work-life balance Compensation:CAD 160000-200000
