Position Summary:
The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Advisor is responsible for managing and optimizing the use of FTAs across global supply chains to reduce duty costs, ensure regulatory compliance, and support strategic sourcing initiatives. This role requires a deep knowledge of international trade regulations, classification, country of origin rules, and FTA qualification processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- FTA Qualification & Solicitation:
- Analyze product data and supplier documentation to determine eligibility under applicable FTAs (e.g., USMCA, CAFTA, EU FTAs).
- Coordinate with suppliers to obtain necessary origin documentation and declarations.
- Maintain records of FTA qualifications and ensure audit readiness.
- Regulatory Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with country-specific FTA regulations and rules of origin.
- Monitor changes in trade agreements and assess their impact on company operations.
- Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to interpret and implement regulatory updates.
- Classification & Origin Determination:
- Work with internal teams to ensure accurate Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification and country of origin determination.
- Support valuation and duty minimization strategies through proper use of FTAs.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Prepare and maintain FTA-related documentation, including certificates of origin and supplier affidavits.
- Generate reports on duty savings, compliance metrics, and FTA utilization.
- Training & Support:
- Provide training and guidance to internal stakeholders on FTA requirements and processes.
- Act as a subject matter expert for trade compliance inquiries related to FTAs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in International Business, Supply Chain, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 3–5 years of experience in trade compliance, international logistics, or customs operations.
- Strong understanding of FTAs, rules of origin, and global trade regulations.
- Experience with ERP and trade management systems (e.g., SAP GTS, Oracle GTM).
- Licensed Customs Broker (LCB), Certified Customs Specialist (CCS), or similar certification preferred.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and project management skills.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with global sourcing and procurement processes.
- Experience working with government agencies (CBP, CBSA, EU Customs).
- Ability to interpret legal and regulatory language.
- Proficiency in Excel and data analysis tools.
