Senior Business Intelligence Engineer

Position Summary 


Prometheus Federal Services (PFS) is a trusted partner of federal health agencies. We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Business Intelligence (BI) Engineer with 10 years of hands-on experience in enterprise data solutions. This role will support the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) by developing and optimizing BI assets that drive data-informed decision-making across all VISNs and facilities. The ideal candidate will be a technical leader with deep knowledge of Power BI, DAX, MDX, T-SQL, and enterprise data modeling. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


Data Connections & Query Development 

  • Maintain and enhance secure, governed connections to the Pyramid Analytics semantic layer and any additional enterprise sources, including Corporate Data Warehouse (CDW) analysis server cubes and databases. 
  • Author, refine, and optimize DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) measures, MDX scripts (Multidimensional Expressions), and T-SQL (Transact-SQL) queries to deliver accurate, performant datasets that adhere to VHA’s business rules. 

 Data Modeling & Enhancement 

  • Continuously evolve the Power BI tabular model by adjusting relationships, hierarchies, calculated columns, and measures. 
  • Support dynamic reporting needs across all VHA facilities and VISNs through iterative model enhancements. 

Report & Dashboard Development 

  • Translate approved wireframes and specifications into polished, interactive dashboards and paginated reports. 
  • Implement advanced Power BI features such as drill-through navigation, slicers, bookmarks, and branded visual elements. 
  • Develop and refine DAX columns and measures to meet emerging requirements.  

Operational Support & Performance Management 

  • Monitor and troubleshoot data refresh schedules. 
  • Apply performance-tuning techniques, including query folding, incremental refresh, and aggregation tables, to maintain optimal report responsiveness. 

Change Control & Release Management 

  • Document all change requests and enhancements in accordance with VHA’s governance protocols. 
  • Prepare detailed release notes and maintain a monthly support log for all deployments. 

Documentation & Knowledge Transfer 

  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including: 
  • Connection configuration guides 
  • Data dictionaries 
  • Technical runbooks and architecture diagrams 
  • Conduct regular workshops and Q&A sessions to transfer procedural and conceptual knowledge to VHA stakeholders. 
  • Ensure all source code, scripts, configuration files, and Power BI workbooks are tuned over at each milestone and project conclusion. 

Minimum Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Business Analytics, or a relevant discipline/field of study. 
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Business Intelligence, Data Engineering, or related fields. 
  • Expert-level proficiency in Power BI, DAX, MDX, and T-SQL. 
  • Strong experience with enterprise data modeling and semantic layer development. 
  • Proven ability to design and deliver complex dashboards and reports. 
  • Familiarity with data governance, change control, and release management processes. 
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills. 
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. indefinitely without sponsorship. 
  • Ability to obtain public trust. 

Preferred Qualification


  • Experience working with healthcare data or within federal agencies (especially VHA). 
  • Familiarity with Pyramid Analytics and CDW environments. 
  • Knowledge of performance optimization techniques in large-scale BI environments.
