About the Role
We are looking for a SeniorSoftware Engineer, Backend to be a part of our growing Smartcart team. You’ll be the key engineer responsible for owning and evolving the backend service that integrates our Machine Learning and Operations Research system for grocery personalization with the backend powering our web and mobile customer experiences.You’ll work closely with data scientists, operations researchers and product engineers to build, deploy, and scale backend services and APIs that serve real-time personalized recommendations and model-driven features.
This role requires strong backend fundamentals and experience with production infrastructure, particularly in FastAPI and AWS.If you're excited about applying machine learning in meaningful, user-facing ways and making an impact on how people grocery shop and eat for the better, we’d love to hear from you.
Responsibilities
- Own and maintain a production FastAPI service that acts as the core interface between our Machine Learning/Operations Research engines and the broader platform
- Ensure system reliability and performance
- Collaborate cross-functionally on product feature development
- Contribute to code quality and maintain best practices
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and ops to translate business needs into scalable solutions
Qualifications
- 6+ years of backend engineering experience
- Strong proficiency in Python, with production experience in FastAPI
- Experience with building, deploying, and maintaining services in production environments
- Solid understanding of AWS services (ECS, EC2, ElastiCache, S3, etc)
- Some knowledge of databases and SQL
- Comfortable pair programming and working independently and collaboratively in remote team environments
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to translate business problems into practical solutions
Nice to haves
- Experience with CI/CD (Github Actions preferred), Docker, nginx
- Familiarity with Databricks or other ML platforms
- Experience with services related to productionalized ML models or ML powered user experiences
- Some experience with Terraform
- On-call experience supporting production systems
