Summary
The K9 Handler, with the use of a trained canine, shall perform access control functions, narcotic detection and patrols throughout all facilities. Qualified personnel will possess characteristics and traits, such as self-control, patience, self-discipline, maturity, attention to detail, and a neat and professional appearance. The handler must be of unquestionable integrity, display a mature, responsible attitude and exercise good judgment. He/she shall actively support and uphold the agency's stated mission, vision and values.
Essential Functions
- Patrols, responds and records any incidents that occur at all Father Joe’s properties. Uses intervention techniques and strategies to prevent and deter incidents
- Canine care; brushing, bathing and inspecting canine’s full body, feeding and vet appointments along with kennel maintenance.
- Perform and document the following training to maintain canine certification: obedience, room, building and vehicle search along with tracking, bite and decoy work
- Reports and handles hazardous materials with proper disposal of narcotic and/or drug paraphernalia
- Generates incident reports and documents interactions as necessary
- On time completion of assigned training and policies
- Provides initial assistance at the scene of an incident, offering Basic Life Support (BLS) treatment, including administering CPR, applying antiseptic solutions to prevent infection, and evaluating the nature and extent of injuries or medical conditions until paramedics arrive. Identifies any pre-existing medical conditions when possible with coordination from staff, and assists in moving individuals to a safe location while cooperating with emergency medical personnel during critical situations.
- Additionally, responds with calm urgency to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, disturbances, elevator emergency, hazardous materials, or inclement weather.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- CA Guard Card certification
- Basic user of MS office
- Minimum of 3 years of driving experience; possesses a valid California driver's license; and has no Class 1 or more than two Class 2 violations within the past 36 months
- Candidate must have a minimum of one (1) year of documented successful canine/dog handling experience
- Candidate must have a minimum of two (2) years security officer experience
- Effective oral and written communication skills with all levels of the organization
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time and multiple priorities to completion
- Problem-solving skills with an analytical thought process
- Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment
- Able to work with flexible schedule due to department needs
The pay rate for this role is based on several factors including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and internal equity. The initial offer usually falls between the minimum and midpoint of the applicable salary range.
