Role Summary
We're hiring a Packaging Design Lead to take full ownership of our physical brand expression across product packaging, labeling, retail displays, and more. This role blends creative execution with compliance, operations, and production precision. You'll work cross-functionally to ensure every product we launch not only looks great but meets legal, operational, and brand standards.This is currently a player-only role with high visibility and strategic impact. You’ll work closely with our Ops, Wholesale, Warehouse, and Supply Chain teams, as well as external printers and vendors.This position is a FT, hybrid role.
You will be required to work from our warehouse in Charlotte, NC, 2-3 days per week.
Responsibilities
Vendor Sourcing
- Identify and engage potential packaging suppliers based on product requirements, technical capabilities, and business needs
- Lead the RFP process with shortlisted vendors to evaluate feasibility, cost, timelines, and quality
- Synthesize proposals and present vendor recommendations to the Director of Operations for final approval
- Collaborate cross-functionally with sourcing and purchasing stakeholders for input as needed.
- Ensure that all selected vendors meet performance, compliance, and operational criteria before onboarding
Packaging & Label Design
- Design and execute packaging, labeling, retail displays, inserts, shippers, and other physical brand assets
- Translate brand and product strategy into compelling physical experiences
- Own dielines, layout, typography, and packaging aesthetics from concept through final print production
- Develop packaging that balances aesthetics, compliance, cost, and feasibility
Regulatory Integration
- Ensure all designs meet relevant legal and regulatory guidelines (FDA, FTC, DSHEA, cannabis-specific rules)
- Collaborate with Compliance and Legal to implement required label language, disclaimers, batch IDs, etc.
- Maintain up-to-date design templates and asset libraries with correct regulatory callouts
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with the Operations and Warehouse teams on packaging feasibility, shipping constraints, and vendor timelines
- Liaise with print vendors to review proofs, confirm print specs, troubleshoot issues, and ensure quality
- Partner with external design studios or freelancers as needed to scale creative output
Production & File Management
- Prepare final print-ready files and manage version control
- Conduct regular audits of physical packaging for accuracy, print quality, and brand consistency
- Keep meticulous design documentation and archive systems
Requirements
Who You Are
- Your attention to detail is unparalleled. You notice and address typos, inconsistent margins or colors, incorrect punctuation and other errors before anyone else, and you correct them immediately.
- Possess 5+ years in packaging and label design, preferably in CPG, food & beverage, supplements, or cannabis
- Proven experience designing across multiple packaging formats (boxes, bottles, pouches, shippers, displays) with a portfolio that proves it
- Experience working with compliance-heavy products and legal teams
- Familiar with packaging materials, print processes, and finishing techniques
- You're fast, but you maintain high quality outputs.
Skills
- Expert in Adobe Creative Suite (especially Illustrator and InDesign)
- Solid understanding of dielines, CMYK/PMS, embossing, foils, UV coatings, and structural packaging
- Strong visual design chops with a portfolio that shows clean, elegant, and production-ready work
- Detail-oriented with exceptional organization and file management skills
- Ability to operate independently and manage multiple deadlines
