As Splitero’s General Counsel, you will navigate the complex legal landscape and drive our regulatory strategy. Internally, you will report directly to the CEO and work closely with senior leadership to drive an innovative compliance strategy and manage all internal legal affairs. Externally, you will partner with outside counsel, lobbyists, and government agencies to draft legislation and influence policy affecting our HEI product.
- Work hand-in-hand with the leadership team to shape and drive the overall business strategy, ensuring that legal, regulatory, and government affairs align with and support the company’s long-term goals, providing strategic legal advice to inform critical business decisions and contribute to developing growth initiatives.
- Ensure that Splitero has a seat at the table in shaping future regulatory landscapes by building solid relationships and collaborating with external consultants, lobbyists, policymakers, and government agencies. Advocate for, draft, and propose regulations and legislation in the HEI space.
- Implement strategies to position Splitero for success in a currently unregulated product space while anticipating potential regulations that could impact the business.
- Serve as an HEI industry leader, representing Splitero’s interests among federal and state regulatory bodies, the Capital Markets, and the Mortgage and Real Estate industries.
- Manage, protect, and oversee all internal legal functions providing sound legal counsel to Splitero’s leadership team on relevant matters, including, but not limited to, vendor contracts, litigation risks, business structure, intellectual property, patents, copyrights, regulatory matters, data privacy, corporate structuring, business expansion, fundraising, employee and business licensing, and operations.
- Identify potential areas of vulnerability within compliance and collaborate with department leaders, including marketing, technology, and operations, to resolve issues, develop training programs, and implement policies and procedures to mitigate risk throughout Splitero.
- Define a strategic roadmap for growing and scaling the internal Legal and Compliance teams.
- Oversee corporate governance practices and ensure adherence to best practices. Manage the company’s legal documentation, including corporate records and contracts.
- Manage all external legal counsel.
The salary range for this position is $250,000 - $350,000. Within the range, individual pay is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
About You
- Licensed attorney in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Eligible for in-house counsel registration in California, if not currently admitted
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- 8+ years of legal experience, with a strong background in regulatory affairs, government relations, and compliance
- Legal expertise with ABS securitizations, structured products, and capital markets transactions, including private placements under 144A and 4(a)(2)
- Familiarity with federal and state laws and regulations governing the origination and servicing of traditional mortgage lending, reverse mortgage, or home equity investment products
- Proven experience in drafting legislation and working with governmental bodies to influence policy for new and evolving markets
- In-house legal experience at a fintech company or startup preferred
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically, work proactively, and communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders
