Senior ICA Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Senior ICA Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have 12+ years of technical experience in Instrumentation, Controls & Automation engineering, with a strong preference for experience in heavy industry construction, specifically in the Cement industry or Oil & Gas sector. This role is part of our Global Technical Services team and is crucial to the seamless operation of our plants and the success of our engineering and project teams. As the go-to technical expert, you’ll provide vital support and make impactful adjustments to our plant systems, while also spearheading new projects, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest technical and safety standards.
 Primary accountabilities include;Electrical Engineering & Installation

  • Work with the CRH site to confirm the Medium Voltage Cable routing
  • Oversee installation of the ehouse, transformer and field power & instrumentation wiring
  • Coordinate the RESA switchgear repair
  • Oversee the energization of the transformer & MCC’s
  • Oversee the fiber optic and internet wire connections with CRH, and integration into the ehouse at site
  • Oversee integration of the MCC, UPS, Fire & Gas panel, and other equipment into the ehouse
  • Develop electrical inspections and preventative maintenance routines with planner/operations manager

Instrumentation & Procurement

  • Review the instrumentation list, datasheets, and vendor bids/confirm purchase selection for the instruments
  • Develop and assist with the procurement of electrical spares
  • Assist with electrical and instrumentation RFI’s if an owner decision is required

Control Systems Development & Integration

  • Oversee development of the plant control system (Allen Bradley) being developed by Accenture/True North
  • Oversee the integration of the Zenith PLC (Siemens in Chinese) into the PCS
  • Oversee the purchase of the PLC hardware and its delivery to Accenture
  • Oversee and actively lead the FAT testing of the plant control software, including start up, shutdown and emergency shutdown scenarios
  • Oversee the development of the plant control simulator
  • Oversee the installation of the PLC cabinets into the ehouse at site

Commissioning & Operations Support·         Assist with commissioning, make small adjustments to the software/programming as required, and coordinate larger changes with Accenture/True North programmers

  • Work with the Operations manager to train the shift operators on plant operation
  • Future operations support (plant outages)
  • Future simulator tours for prospective customers/investors

Desired Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Instrumentation and Controls Engineer or a Senior Instrumentation Technologist with an ASET designation (CET,RET,RPT). Electrical Engineering experience would be a bonus.
  • Professional Status: Registered professional engineer (P.Eng) or P.Tech in Alberta, in good standing.
  • Technical Proficiency: 12+ years of experience with instrumentation, control and automation systems, including programming PLCs, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
  • Equipment Familiarity: Experience with rotating equipment, material conveying systems, and hydraulic & lubrication systems.
  • Software Skills: Proven ability to program HMI, DCS and PLC systems, particularly Allen-Bradley components.
  • Comprehensive Knowledge: Broad understanding of I&C discipline, including installation, commissioning, and control system interfaces.
  • Collaborative Success: Proven track record of working effectively with EPCM contractors, suppliers, union labour, regulatory agencies, and owner’s teams.
  • Operational Savvy: Hands-on experience with plant start-ups and operations.

Experience in the following would be considered an asset:

  • Element, loop and function checking
  • Participation in HAZAN and HAZOP studies
  • Strong experience during detailed design / EPC phases of projects
  • Motor controls, up to 1000hp, and VFDs
  • Plant network / automation / control system strategies
  • Control compatibility and integration for vendor packages
  • Plant control system architecture
  • Ability to conduct Factory and Site Acceptance Testing
  • Development of internal standards
  • Knowledge and understanding of international standards
