Senior Configuration Specialist (4334)

SMX is seeking a highly skilled Senior Configuration Specialist to support procurement and configuration management operations for a federal customer’s cloud and DevSecOps program. This role is essential to ensuring that Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software, licenses, and supporting assets are accurately tracked, integrated, and maintained across complex IL5 environments. The successful candidate will play a key role in enabling secure, scalable, and auditable delivery pipelines and shared services supporting enterprise transformation objectives. This position is a hybrid role supporting a Herndon, VA based team.

Essential Duties:


  • Manage software procurement lifecycle activities, including tracking license renewals, compliance requirements, and inventory for COTS and custom-developed software.
  • Maintain accurate configuration item (CI) records, version control, and asset baselines across development, test, and production environments.
  • Ensure proper documentation and traceability for software deployments, updates, and decommissioning activities across NBIS environments.
  • Coordinate with engineering and security teams to validate the compatibility and compliance of software tools within IL5 cloud environments.
  • Support risk mitigation by maintaining records of configurations that are critical to maintaining ATO and audit readiness.
  • Leverage configuration management databases (CMDBs), inventory systems, and software asset management tools.
  • Collaborate with procurement, finance, and program teams to ensure alignment with acquisition strategies and program schedules.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of configuration management plans, SOPs, and process documentation.   

Required Skills & Experience:


  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in configuration management, software asset management, or procurement support.
  • Familiarity with DoD or federal acquisition processes, and software lifecycle management practices.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage configuration baselines in secure environments.
  • Experience with asset management systems and configuration tools (e.g., CMDBs, ServiceNow, Jira).
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Secret clearance

Desired Skills & Experience


  • Experience supporting software procurement and configuration in AWS GovCloud or IL5 cloud environments.
  • Familiarity with FedRAMP, RMF, and STIG requirements for software tracking and compliance.
  • Certifications such as ITIL, CMPIC, or CompTIA Security+.
  • Experience using Agile tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence) and familiarity with DevSecOps workflows.
