SMX is seeking a Senior
Systems Administrator to support a federal law enforcement agency’s enterprise IT infrastructure by leading the installation, configuration, and optimization of complex network, monitoring, and logging applications. This role includes mentoring junior administrators, evaluating and guiding vendor selections, and ensuring seamless integration of critical systems. The administrator will be responsible for diagnosing and resolving complex application issues—including integration failures, data inconsistencies, and security incidents—and enforcing robust access controls and security policies.

Responsibilities also include performance tuning, forecasting system needs, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations. The role requires strong collaboration with stakeholders to align technical solutions with mission objectives. Comprehensive documentation must be maintained using platforms like Jira and Confluence. The Senior Systems Administrator is also expected to lead response efforts for outages or other critical incidents. This is a hybrid role supporting a Clarksburg, WV customer and requires a Top-Secret clearance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Lead the installation, configuration, patching, and tuning of enterprise applications and infrastructure.
  • Monitor and optimize system performance; identify bottlenecks and implement resolution strategies.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex application and integration issues, ensuring availability and reliability.
  • Implement and enforce application security standards and monitor access controls.
  • Forecast capacity needs and plan for system scaling and enhancements.
  • Collaborate across teams to align IT systems with mission-critical business goals.
  • Maintain compliance with federal security and operational standards.
  • Respond to application outages and critical incidents as part of a rotational on-call schedule.
  • Maintain documentation in Jira, Confluence, or equivalent repositories for system configurations and SOPs.

Required Skills / Experience: 


  • 3–5 years of professional experience in system administration with demonstrated success in a senior or lead role.
  • Proven expertise managing complex application environments across Windows, Linux, and Unix systems.
  • Strong understanding of networking protocols, network architecture, and network security principles.
  • Proficiency with enterprise monitoring and licensing tools such as Riverbed, Splunk, and Cisco Catalyst Center.
  • Scripting abilities in Python, Bash, or similar tools for automating administrative tasks.
  • Familiarity with cloud technologies and deployment strategies.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Team leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Experience working in Agile environments using Scrum, Kanban, and the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe).

Desired Skills / Experience: 


  •  Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience evaluating and selecting network hardware/software vendors.
  • Expertise in documenting procedures and configurations using tools like Jira and Confluence.
  • Background in leading incident response for application-related outages or security events.
  • Knowledge of compliance frameworks and IT security standards relevant to federal environments.
