Position Title:Environmental Health and Safety CoordinatorClassification:Non-exempt, HourlyDepartment:Production / EHSSupervises:N/AReports To:Plant Manager / Dotted Line to Corporate EHS teamWork Schedule:Varies by plant

POSITION SUMMARY:  


The Environmental, Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for planning and executing EHS  activities at the assigned facility for the purpose of improvement of the health and safety of all associates and ensure that the facility is in compliance with all state and federal environment and safety requirements.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Execute and track compliance of all Environmental Health & Safety Management Programs.
  • Monitor compliance with federal, state and corporate health & safety policies and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain and ensure completion of all daily site required documentation related to environmental requirements, i.e. visual inspections (opacity), periodic check of operational control devices, storm water inspection throughout the facility. 
  • Work with corporate EH&S group and plant management on environmental audit results and corrective actions as well as any environmental releases that may occur.
  • Ensure that newly hired employees and any contractor(s) performing work onsite are trained on the SMI environmental and safety policies. 
  • Communicate and assist in implementing any troubleshooting contingency or corrective actions plans for environmental noncompliance issues.
  • Assist Plant Manager and Corporate EH&S with required submissions to outside governmental agencies.
  • Monitor corporate environmental health & safety directives for implementation at the site level.  
  • Conduct EHS training for employees and contractors
  • Coordinate EHS compliance requirements
  • Understand and track EHS Performance
  • Communicate EHS Performance effectively to all levels of the organization
  • Oversee Contractor Safety process
  • Interpret EHS data, environmental conditions, and work environments
  • Assist in developing and deliver of timely investigations and reports
  • Manage incident reporting and implementation of corrective actions
  • Maintain and update records of all housekeeping (i.e. 5S) and required inspections
  • Work with the facility safety steering committee 
  • Operate industrial power motor vehicles as needed
  • Perform environmental health and safety audits
  • Inspect plant equipment
  • Maintain safety supply inventory

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Three to five years of experience in environmental health and safety field in a manufacturing environment 
  • Good computer skills, proficiency with MS Office, especially Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Ability to create and execute project work plans
  • Strong teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Ability to analyze data and produce reports
  • Good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to draw, read and understand flow charts
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently
  • Ability to handle emergency response situations

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:     


  • First Aid andCPR (training will be provided if needed)
  • Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and applicable regulatory agencies

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements occasionally.
  • Heights – work at heights above 48 inches may require the wearing of additional safety equipment.
  • Dust/Fumes – when required employees must be able to wear respiratory protective equipment and/or participate in medical exams as part of our respiratory protection program.  
  • Extreme Heat/Cold – most operational areas are not heated or cooled.
  • Rain/Snow – work surfaces may become slippery, appropriate work shoes are required.
  • Uneven Terrain – employees may be required to walk on surfaces where materials are accumulated, appropriate work shoes are required.
  • High Noise Levels -employees may be required to wear hearing protection and/or complete hearing examinations as part of our hearing conservation program.

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS: 


The job requires documentation and demonstrated ability to operate the following equipment.  

  • Forklift
  • Any type of power industrial truck experience or usage as skill required. 

*The ability to complete additional on-site training will be required before these vehicles can be used at an SMI facility.

Mobility 


  • Bending – bending/twisting at the waist will be required for extended periods. 
  • Standing – standing for extended periods may be required. 
  • Walking – walking on flat or uneven surfaces, up and down stairs and on grass or gravel will be required.
  • Sitting – sitting at certain workstations or in powered industrial vehicles may be required.
  • Climbing - will need to climb stairs and climb ladders.

Articulation


  • Lifting/Carrying – lifting loads up to 50 pounds may be required, assisting in lifting heavy loads with others may be required.  
  • Reaching – the ability to extend arms fully is required.
  • Grasping – the ability to close both hands to grasp small objects is required.
  • Repetitive Movements – the ability to reach and grasp for extended period is required.
