SUMMARY:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Clinical Research Intern to join our team. This internship offers an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the clinical research field, assisting with the planning, execution, and analysis of clinical trials. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in healthcare, research methodologies, and a desire to contribute to advancing medical knowledge. As an intern, you will work closely with experienced professionals to support various stages of the research process and develop valuable skills for a career in clinical research.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Clinical Tasks:
- Maintain a safe, clean working environment, including infection control requirements
- Process specimens received in the laboratory under the guidance of the clinical research coordinator (CRC). This task may include specimen transport, handling, sorting, requisition entry, inventory accountability.
- Performing CLIA waived testing such as urine pregnancy testing, urine dip analysis, urine drug screen testing, alcohol testing, Rapid Antigen Testing, under the guidance of the CRC
- Ensure specimen collection/processing/shipping are performed according to protocol, under the guidance of the CRC
- Develop strong working relationships and maintain effective communication with study team members
- Develop strong working relationships with the investigators and staff to build a foundation of trust and respect
- Adhere to an IRB approved protocol
- Support the safety of research subjects
- Comply with Elligo, Clinic, and Sponsor policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines.
Administrative Tasks:
- Patient Scheduling and Appointment Management: Helping to schedule and confirm patient appointments, as well as updating patient information in the system.
- Filing and Document Management: Organizing patient records, filing paperwork, and ensuring that documents are properly stored (physical or digital).
- Data Entry: Inputting research data or patient information into electronic medical records (EMRs) or research databases.
- Preparing Consent Forms and Research Documents: Assisting in the preparation of patient consent forms and other research-related documents.
- Answering Phones and Responding to Inquiries: Handling phone calls, answering basic questions, and directing inquiries to the appropriate staff.
- Inventory Management: Assisting with tracking medical or office supplies and notifying staff when supplies are low.
Cleaning Tasks:
- Disinfecting Exam Rooms and Equipment: Wiping down surfaces, disinfecting examination tables, chairs, and medical equipment after each patient visit or research session.
- Cleaning Common Areas: Ensuring waiting rooms, hallways, and office spaces are clean and tidy for patients and staff.
- Hand Sanitation and PPE Stations: Keeping areas where personal protective equipment (PPE) is stored clean and ensuring sanitization stations are stocked.
- Trash Removal and Waste Management: Ensuring that medical waste is disposed of properly, as well as taking out general office trash and recycling.
- Restocking Cleaning Supplies: Assisting in the organization and restocking of cleaning supplies, such as disinfectants, gloves, and hand sanitizers.
Other:
- Pick up dry ice at offsite locations and transport to the clinic on a regular basis.
- Perform other duties as required and/or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with coworkers and study staff
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to accomplish multiple tasks within established timeframes through effective prioritization of duties and functions in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to recognize and synthesize information
- Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction from manager to accomplish objectives
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent interpersonal and customer relationship skills
- Aptitude to work effectively and positively with a team and a diverse group of individuals
- Basic skill level with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software (MS Office skills such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology preferred
- Valid driver license required
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in healthcare, clinical research, or a clinical setting is preferred, however as this is an intern role, having the motivation and aptitude to learn is highly recommended.
- Current college student pursuing a degree in medicine, biology, or health sciences preferred
ENVIRONMENT:
This job operates in a professional clinical research office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.The clinical work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment. Additionally, will work with blood or blood-borne pathogensDue to potential exposure to blood borne pathogens, 90% of works tasks require prolonged glove wear.Minimal travel (up to 15%) is required to support the position’s responsibilities. This is a local, onsite position at a clinical research site with office hours typically 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Occasional evening or weekend work hours may be required per study specific requirements.
