This entry-level role is ideal for individuals looking to build a career in archives.
The Archives Technician supports the organization, preservation, and accessibility of archival materials by assisting with unpacking, inventorying, housing, labeling, shelving, and scan preparation. This hands-on position plays a key part in ensuring archival collections are properly processed and maintained.RESPONSIBILITIESProcessing:· Successfully unpack and install unprocessed archival collections.· Sort, inventory, house, rehouse, label, and tag objects, textural ephemera, media, and imagery.· Create and maintain accurate box and item-level lists.· Assist in verifying legacy inventories for accuracy and completeness.· Identify at-risk materials requiring preservation, isolation, conservation treatment, and/or potential disposition.· Prepare materials for digitization by scan prepping.· Reshelve materials in accordance with established archival standards.· Track daily processing activity and project metrics using internal software tools.Vault Maintenance:· Assist with the maintenance and organization of the archival vault.· Support the relocation and transportation of collections as needed.· Assist in monitoring environmental conditions in the vault· Support the implementation of disaster preparedness and response plansSupply Utilization:· Monitor supply usage and communicate housing and inventory needs to supervisor.· Assist with receiving, unpacking, and organizing archival supplies for distribution.
Requirements
· Bachelor's degree in History, Library Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.· Familiarity with archival practices, principles, and ethical standards preferred.· Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.· Proven ability to follow standard operating procedures and work both independently and as part of a team· Appreciation for quality control of work and peer review processes.· Demonstrates the highest level of integrity and professionalism when handling sensitive information and materials.· Comfortable interacting with both academic and executive-level colleagues.· Thrives in fast-paced, deadline-driven, and dynamic work environments· Strong sense of accountability and ownership of assigned tasks and materials.· Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, climb ladders, and maneuver safely within a warehouse setting.· Proficient in both Windows and Mac operating systems.
