Mechanical Engineer – Cable Magnets

Commonwealth Fusion SystemsDevens, Massachussets, United StatesHybrid, Onsite

About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future. We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us.

People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team. If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a Mechanical Engineer – Cable Magnets

As a Mechanical Engineer for the SPARC superconducting cable magnets, you will own hardware from early concepts to SPARC delivery, performing thermal, structural, and electromagnetic analysis using hand calculations and finite element methods. You will develop design notes, technical specifications, assembly procedures and documentation necessary to manufacture and install the hardware and supporting systems. In your role you will also support procurement in the preparation and execution of manufacturing contracts.

What you'll do:

  • Produce new and iterate on existing design concepts using NX, using a deep understanding of physics and structural mechanics for both metallics and composites
  • Perform thermal, structural, and electromagnetic analysis to inform decisions on SPARC magnets, including conductors, insulation, joints, supports, fluid manifolds, insulator breaks
  • Own product from final design through final assembly and commissioning for SPARC, ensuring SPARC is able to achieve first plasma on-schedule
  • Diagnose issues on the production and assembly line and provide path forward based on known understanding of hardware
  • Work with the SPARC plant and tokamak operations team to integrate the system into overall control system architecture·       Work with experimental teams on instrumentation, measurement, and correlation of experiment to analysis
  • Provide technical support to procurement during manufacturing
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation to serve as design review and validation
  • Develop team systems to better serve the magnet systems teams during the ARC era

What we're looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, physics, or another relevant field
  • At least 3 years of engineering design and analysis experience
  • At least 1 year providing engineering support to production hardware in the form of resolving technical issues and executing design changes for manufacturing ramp up
  • Excellent fundamental knowledge of mechanical systems such as static structures and heat transfer. Relevant hands-on experience in the form of parts designed for high loads and extreme environments
  • Demonstrated record of design of mechanical components beyond desktop scale. E.g. high power (MW+), high mass (ton+), high force (MN+)
  • Solid background in component design and performing detailed analyses
  • Familiarity with all steps in the design process with an emphasis on creativity and simplicity
  • Authored documentation in the form of specifications to drive requirements to manufacturing and assembly.
  • Be self-motivated and exhibit excellent problem-solving skills

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with vacuum, cryogenics, nuclear irradiation, superconductivity, electromagnetics
  • Hands on experience developing and executing testing to buy down technical risk in new hardware development
  • Knowledge of the design, analysis and installation of components in a ultra high vacuum environment
  • Worked under a formal program for quality assurance and quality control.

Must-have requirements:

  • Perform activities such as sitting for extended periods of time
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics

Life at Commonwealth Fusion Systems

The fastest path to clean, limitless fusion energy in time to make a difference. Energy use is a fundamental enabler for improved quality of life worldwide, yet historically it has come at an extreme cost to the environment. Fusion energy can change that. We aim to deploy fusion energy to the world on a timescale that will make a difference. CFS is combining proven physics backed by decades of government-funded fusion research with a revolutionary superconducting magnet technology to accelerate the path to commercial fusion energy. If you are interested in helping us bring this vision to reality, we would like to hear from you.
