Job Description:
We are seeking a Systems Architect to lead the architecture and technical strategy of our customer-facing applications in the healthcare space. This role will focus on building scalable, secure, and high-performing systems that power critical workflows including patient onboarding, provider interactions, test ordering, and results delivery. You will be instrumental in driving modernization, ensuring best practices are followed across architecture, infrastructure, security, and deployment strategies. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in software design patterns, cloud-native application architecture, messaging queues, and data management, with a strong understanding of healthcare compliance requirements like HIPAA.
You will work closely with product, engineering, DevOps, InfoSec, and compliance teams to design and deliver robust solutions that meet both functional and non-functional requirements.
Responsibilities:
Platform Architecture & Application Strategy
- Design and oversee the architecture of customer-facing healthcare applications with a focus on scalability, security, and maintainability.
- Define and implement architectural best practices including reusable components, modular services, and clean coding standards.
- Introduce design patterns and technical frameworks to enable faster, high-quality development across multiple teams.
- Evaluate and incorporate new technologies to improve user experience, performance, and system reliability.
Cloud & Deployment Strategy
- Lead cloud strategy and deployment architecture using AWS, Azure, or GCP, ensuring scalability, fault tolerance, and cost optimization.
- Define and implement CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
- Guide the creation of staging, test, and production environments with automated deployment and rollback mechanisms.
- Ensure infrastructure meets healthcare compliance and auditability standards.
Messaging, Integration & System Communication
- Architect event-driven systems and asynchronous workflows using messaging queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, etc.).
- Define integration patterns for interoperability with EMRs, third-party APIs, and internal microservices.
- Establish scalable and secure RESTful and event-based APIs for external and internal system communication.
- Ensure resiliency and proper error handling across distributed systems.
Data Strategy & Management
- Design and maintain robust data models and schemas aligned with business and compliance needs.
- Provide architectural direction for handling clinical, genomic, and transactional data in healthcare settings.
- Work closely with engineering and data teams to optimize data access, caching, indexing, and storage mechanisms.
- Ensure proper data governance and controls across patient and provider-facing systems.
Security, NFRs & Compliance
- Ensure all systems meet or exceed healthcare compliance and regulatory requirements including HIPAA and SOC2.
- Define and uphold architectural standards for non-functional requirements such as performance, reliability, monitoring, and logging.
- Collaborate with InfoSec to implement secure data access, encryption, authentication (OAuth2, OpenID Connect), and role-based access control.
- Define observability standards (logging, tracing, metrics) to proactively detect and address system bottlenecks and failures.Cross-Team Collaboration & Leadership
- Collaborate with product, engineering, DevOps, QA, and InfoSec to ensure architecture aligns with business goals and customer needs.
- Act as a technical advisor and mentor for engineering teams, conducting design and code reviews.
- Drive architectural discussions during sprint planning and release cycles, ensuring technical debt is managed and priorities are balanced.
- Partner with leadership to align technical initiatives with company roadmap and long-term vision.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 4+ years in architecture or technical leadership roles.
- Proven experience architecting and scaling customer-facing platforms in regulated industries (preferably healthcare).
- Strong expertise in modern cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), containers (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure-as-code.
- Proficiency in microservices architecture, API design, and asynchronous messaging.
- Strong database design experience in both SQL (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Redis) systems.
- Deep understanding of system-level NFRs including high availability, observability, disaster recovery, and incident response.
- Experience working with authentication/authorization, audit logging, and healthcare-specific compliance controls (e.g., HIPAA, SOC2).
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in HL7/FHIR integration and EMR interoperability.
- Familiarity with patient and provider portal design.
- Exposure to genomic or lab systems is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with API gateways, service meshes, or platform engineering initiatives.
- Familiarity with healthcare-specific workflows such as test ordering, accessioning, and report delivery.
Additional Technical Qualities We Value
- Strong understanding of end-to-end system architecture — including frontend, backend, integrations, infrastructure, and data layers.
- Hands-on experience with modern frontend frameworks (React, Angular, Vue) and building secure, responsive, scalable user interfaces.
- Proven ability to design distributed, loosely coupled, and resilient systems using microservices and event-driven architectures.
- Experience with real-time data pipelines, caching strategies, and data consistency models (e.g., eventual consistency, CQRS).
- Familiarity with DevOps best practices including container orchestration, environment provisioning, and blue/green deployments.
- Demonstrated ability to reduce time-to-market by introducing reusable components, developer platforms, and smart architectural guardrails.
- A mindset of continuous improvement, bringing innovation and a product-thinking approach to architecture decisions.
- Proven leadership in evaluating emerging technologies and driving forward scalable, maintainable, and compliant solutions.
