Associate Principal, Mechanical Engineering

Associate Principal, Mechanical Engineering is a senior-level leadership position in Wight & Company’s MEP Engineering group. We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled technical leader with 15+ years of experience to act as responsible charge for our diverse portfolio of projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in HVAC engineering principles, a passion for technical design, critical thinking skills and a keen interest in integrated design and delivery processes. This role offers the opportunity to oversee a group of talented engineers, guiding them in all phases of project development.

Core Responsibilities:


  • Guide internal and external clients through feasibility, conceptual, and early planning of projects through final design, construction and post-occupancy. Evaluate system selection based on analysis of multiple design options.
  • Concisely and clearly convey technical solutions and performance objectives while ensuring complete project alignment with client goals, project design, sustainability objectives, schedule, budget, constructability and post-occupancy performance.
  • Collaborate and guide interdisciplinary teams, including architecture, sustainability, construction, and other consultants, to support the integrated delivery of projects.
  • Serve as technical expert in the firm for mechanical (HVAC) engineering. Conduct research on systems, products, building codes, and sustainable design practices to inform project decisions.
  • Develop new techniques and processes for the group and the firm overall. Implement initiatives to improve group performance, commitment, quality and deliverables.
  • Lead technical training and mentoring of engineering staff to achieve optimal performance and efficiency of the group while promoting continuous improvement, ownership and accountability. Mentor staff and provide guidance to help them achieve their professional aspirations.
  • Participate in cross-discipline career development. Engage in continuous learning opportunities, attend industry events, and lead internal training sessions to enhance group skills and knowledge.
  • Foresee potential firm wide and project issues, evaluate alternative solutions, and proactively seek out creative resolutions. Take preventive measures to address problems before they arise. Adjust to changing priorities to ensure client confidence, project success, and firm excellence.
  • Forecast, allocate, and adjust group resources; ensuring team members are appropriately assigned and utilized. Communicate effectively and coordinate across teams for resource distribution. Monitor utilization to optimize efficiency, quality and profitability.
  • Proactively identify and pursue new business opportunities, leveraging both existing relationships and new networks. Collaborate with internal teams to develop proposals that exceed client objectives and highlight the firm’s capabilities.

Requirements:


  • Education: Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from ABET accredited mechanical engineering program. Master of Science (MS) degree from ABET accredited mechanical engineering program a plus.
  • Experience: 15+ years of full-time mechanical (HVAC) engineering experience in an engineering firm, with a leadership or management role in the analysis, design, and documentation for various project typologies and systems.
  • Knowledge: IBC, IMC, IECC, ASME & ASHRAE Building Codes and Standards.
  • Licensing and Certification: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required. LEED or other sustainable building certification preferred.
  • Skills: critical thinking, analytical problem-solving skills, technical expertise, attention to detail, adaptability, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Passion: A genuine interest in integrated design and delivery, with a commitment to growth and development of the firm.

Salary Range: $135,000 - $200,000. Individual pay will be based on several factors including experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant.Wight & Company offers excellent benefits and a wonderful work environment.
