Position Summary:


Under the supervision of the Prevention & Education Manager, the Advocate is responsible for providing confidential support, information, advocacy and resources to members and staff of the California Legislature who experience sexual assault, sexual harassment or intimate partner violence. Confidential services include providing information to victims about reporting processes and resources, providing advocacy and support during investigations, and providing accompaniment when appropriate. The Advocate will also collaborate with legislative staff to develop and facilitate outreach and trainings addressing sexual violence and domestic violence prevention, and resources for impacted victims, for Legislative members, their staff, and lobbyists who interact with the Legislature. 

Essential Functions:


Advocacy


  • Provide confidential advocacy for Senators, Assemblymembers, and their respective staff; offering staff who experience sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking or domestic violence emotional support, reporting options, advocacy, accompaniment and internal and external resources.
  • Assist members and staff with the process of reporting sexual violence; provide support and accompaniment as requested during administrative or criminal justice investigation processes.
  • Provide members and staff accompaniment as needed with law enforcement, court hearing, human resource meetings, and seeking medical attention. 
  • Support and advocate on behalf of members and staff as needed based on their experiencing sexual violence, stalking or domestic violence.
  • Maintain a physical presence at assigned office space within the Legislature’s facilities to be directly available to Members and staff for confidential services.
  • Connect Members and staff to appropriate other supportive services and resources, both within WEAVE and elsewhere in the community.

Outreach and Education:


  • With the input of the Manager and in collaboration with Legislative staff, assist in the development and implementation of domestic and sexual violence prevention training and outreach materials.
  • Facilitate approved presentations and workshops on domestic and sexual violence as requested for Senators, Assemblymembers, staff and lobbyists. 
  • Foster, build, and maintain effective working relationships with partners and stakeholders. 
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Legislative staff to coordinate outreach events, presentations, trainings and tabling requests.

Other Responsibilities:


  • Collaborate with internal teams, external agencies, and community partners to coordinate activities and referrals for services as needed.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and one-on-one meetings with supervisors to ensure successful completion of project goals and to enhance skills, knowledge, and awareness of domestic violence issues and case management best practices.
  • Promote a culture of respect, equity, and diversity within WEAVE and the community.
  • Consistent with agency and program requirements, maintain accurate, timely and confidential records of services provided.
  • Adhere to all agency and department policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or a related field is strongly preferred; significant relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of this qualification. 
  • Professional experience working with domestic violence and sexual assault programs preferred. 
  • Prior public speaking, training and/or presentation experience. 
  • Knowledge of prevention education strategies regarding domestic violence, sexual assault, and sexual harassment. 
  • Ability to deliver advocacy and training on difficult topics with the highest degree of professionalism. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive work and learning environment. 
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to the WEAVE mission and values. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; excellent organizational and planning skills and the ability to multi-task. 
  • Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends to facilitate trainings or attend outreach events. 
  • Satisfactory results of civil and criminal background checks.
  • Successful completion WEAVE’s 69-hour peer counselor training program (post-hiring requirement.)
  • Annual completion of WEAVE’s continuing education requirements to maintain Peer Counselor certification. 
  • Valid California Driver’s license and reliable transportation, including vehicle insurance.

Local travel (driving) will be required to conduct activities or provide accompaniments at various area locations. Employees may need to move around and between floors and buildings, occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 25 lbs., or reach items above their head, below their waist, or stored in/on drawers and shelves.

  Employees may also need to remain in one position (i.e. sitting or standing) for an extended period while completing work tasks. Must be able to efficiently operate a keyboard and mouse or adaptive equivalent, write reports, take notes; utilize desk tools such as phones or calculators, and utilize larger office equipment such as printers and copy machines.   Communicate clearly and concisely to others.  Apply above average reasoning and attention to detail as required in the accomplishment of job duties.  24.46 To 34.50 (USD) Hourly
