Aerospace/Software Engineering Intern

 a.i. solutions is looking to hire interns for the FreeFlyer product group to contribute to the solution of real-world flight dynamics problems in the aerospace industry supporting customers such as NASA, the US Air Force, and commercial companies worldwide. FreeFlyer is an industry-leading commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) flight dynamics tool that is used in ground systems supporting communications, scientific, military, and educational projects to enable mission planning and awareness. Being a FreeFlyer intern means making meaningful contributions to the future of the tool as you either work with the development team to conduct research into new technologies and develop software prototypes or work with the technical support team to use the tool and overcome challenging aerospace engineering hurdles in support of our customers. As part of this work, FreeFlyer interns will interface with all areas of the FreeFlyer product team, learn about the industry, and learn about what a.i. solutions contributes to that industry over the course of their time with our team. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to embrace the a.i. solutions mission and work to continually exceed the expectations of our customers.

Summer 2025 Internship Dates:


Monday, May 19th, 2025 to Friday, August 15th, 2025.

Essential Roles & Responsibilities:


  • Development Focus Plan and run simulations on third-party tools to improve developer productivity
  • Investigate performance-improving external software architectures for use in the product
  • Design and develop utility and infrastructure applications for use by the FreeFlyer team

  • Systems Engineering Focus Generate sample Mission Plans in FreeFlyer in response to customer requests
  • Build and update orbital mechanics instructional materials using FreeFlyer
  • Create FreeFlyer webcasts and demonstration videos to highlight new features
  • Update the FreeFlyer help file both in architecture and in content

  • General
  • Support the FreeFlyer team’s release cycle with verification testing efforts
  • Provide meaningful design feedback during group reviews of new FreeFlyer features
  • Attend company group meetings to better understand the industry and how we fit into it
  • Learn about the different missions the company supports and our role in those tasks

Minimum Qualifications:


  • A current Brooke Owens Fellow
  • Basic familiarity with flight dynamics and/or orbital mechanics
  • Full time enrollment for Fall of 2025 towards a degree
  • U.S. citizenship

Desirable Experience:


  • Experience with FreeFlyer and excitement about flight dynamics.
  • Programming experience in C++, C#, and Java; working with source-controlled operational code.
  • Ability to quickly connect in-person and in writing, and to actively listen and perceive the needs, values, or opinions of others.
  • Proactivity in identifying and addressing challenges to include innovations that result in positive organizational impact.
  • Demonstrated leadership accomplishments academically and personally.
