Grants Accountant at Health Care for the Homeless

Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Grants Manager, the Grants Accountant is responsible for recording financial transactions, monitoring, and maintaining the grant compliance of expenditures, and tracking expenditures to grant and internal budgets. As grants are one of the main funding sources for the sustainable operations of Health Care for the Homeless, this role is key to ensuring operational and financial effectiveness.

Key Role Responsibilities

Conduct regular monitoring and auditing of grant spending on assigned grants and collaborate with program managers and grant administrators resolving spending issues.
Resolve grant spending issues and make appropriate journal entries with supporting documentation.
Report on grant spending variances to budget.
Monthly reconciliation of grant spending, record grant revenue and prepare necessary month-end journal entries.
Work with members of the finance team to properly allocate and code grant invoices.
Inform payroll of personnel changes related to grant spending.
Accurately prepare monthly and quarterly grant invoices for assigned grants in compliance with grant terms.
Prepare monthly grant reports and other ad hoc reports as requested including backup documentation in a timely manner.
Effectively assist in the preparation and input into the general ledger system of annual grant budgets including backup documentation.
Effectively assist in the preparation and review of grant proposals and budgets
Supply copies of audits and regulatory documentation to the appropriate requestor

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills

Formal Education and Training

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required

Experience

Three years of progressively responsible accounting experience
General ledger entry and account reconciliation experience, preferably MIP
Intermediate Excel and Accounting software experience
Proficiency with automated systems and willingness and ability to learn new software packages
Fund accounting and Compliance Audit experience a plus

Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
Flexible approach, working with several cross-disciplinary teams in a collaborative style
Ability to work independently, with initiative, and handle multiple priorities and tasks

Health Care for the Homeless pieces together over 40 public and private funding sources to provide comprehensive services to homeless people. We depend upon private contributions to cover a substantial portion of our annual budget. With help from our individual supporters, we provided comprehensive services to over 8,500 men, women and children last year. Your contribution goes a long way. Resources obtained through private donations helps meet a range of needs including much needed medication, medical supplies, transportation, clothing, food, and emergency care for people with disabilities.
