OBJECTIVE:
The Clinical Animal Technician performs various critical care and administrative tasks associated with the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic health conditions in research animals. The Clinical Animal Technician will assist in supervision of the clinical care program in consultation with the attending veterinarian.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• BS in Biology, Animal Science or a related field; or completion of college level Laboratory Animal Technician program; or at least a high school diploma, ALAT, LAT or LAT’G certification from AALAS and at least 1 additional year of experience in biomedical research• 3-5 years of direct experience • Knowledge of the biology and physical characteristics of animals used in research and the ability to recognize signs of illness and abnormalities, considerable knowledge of the care and handling of laboratory animals• Knowledge regarding the methods and materials used in laboratory work• Able to work and communicate professionally with investigators, supervisors and caretakers• Able to make accurate observations, keep current, accurate, and complete records• Able to read, understand, and interpret written and oral instruction and perform math calculations in conduct of experimental proceduresDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:-Perform all necessary clinical treatments on animals as prescribed by the attending veterinarian. -Organize, collate, and maintain colony rounds records in support of animal health issues. -Work with Operations Manager to determine schedules of staff to cover clinical duties. -Maintain current and correct documentation.
Organize and archive information in animal records. -Supervise overall clinical program to include staff assisting with clinical treatments, their documentation, and case resolutions. -Collaborate with attending veterinarian to refine clinical program to elicit additional efficiencies, and drive innovation for future approaches. -Review, correct, and confirm completion of all clinical paperwork. -Assist in continuous improvement of the clinical program to include processes, documentation, and electronic databases. -Oversee inventory of supplies and pharmaceuticals related to the clinical care of research animals. -Organize periodic technician meetings to review case studies and overall operations of clinical program• Assist with necropsy procedures including tissue collection• Collects, verifies, and correlates facility records and makes timely reports to the supervisor• Collects blood, tissue and various fluid samples from the animals• Performs various IV, SC, intranasal and intramuscular injections• Performs anesthesia and euthanasia as required• Read and understand standard operating procedures (SOP’s) for animal facilities• Perform routine inoculations• Assist in the processing and shipment of serum/tissue samples•, physical exertion100% sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing & pulling
