Position Overview 


We are hiring a Director/Managing Director as the global head of our People & Culture (HR) team. This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer.The People & Culture team consists of 6 full-time HR professionals and 6 part-time contributors in Asia, Europe and the US. Our team is structured around 5 main areas:

  • Operational excellence, including People Operations, Comp and Benefits, Travel Safety, and HRIS/Data
  • Talent Acquisition
  • Learning & Development
  • Talent & Organizational Management
  • DEI and Culture

The Head of People & Culture partners with leadership and works with an advisory body (the People Council) to steward the people strategy, and the role owns the implementation of the People Plan.  The principal objectives of the role are to lead the People & Culture function in attracting and retaining top talent, developing employee skills and managing employee performance, fostering employee engagement ensuring compliance with labor laws, supporting the team’s HR needs, creating a positive and inclusive work environment, and contributing to the organization's long-term growth and sustainability.

The head of People & Culture works across the organization to achieve these goals and drive organizational success.While BSR has a hybrid and remote workforce, for this position it is our strong preference to hire a candidate able to work in/near our US or Europe offices: preferably New York, NY; London; or Paris. But also open to San Francisco, CA; Washington, DC; Copenhagen

Key Responsibilities


  • People & Culture Team Leadership: Recruit and manage a high performing team of HR professionals prepared to support the global BSR team with speed, excellence, care, and compassion within a global operating context. Assess organizational needs and align team members and their roles to deliver strong support. The current team includes 6 full-time HR professionals and 6 part-time contributors.
  • Talent acquisition: Guide the talent acquisition function in sourcing, evaluating, and hiring circa 20 professionals per year in consulting roles on Engagement Team (80%) and enabling roles on our Shared Services Teams (20%). We seek mission-focused individuals with strong business sense, people with interest and expertise in sustainable business, and those who work effectively with companies to deliver value for the business and impact for the world.
  • People Ops: Lead the global People Ops team in handling employee relations matters and providing front-line support to BSR staff with their questions and needs. Administer onboarding and offboarding, manage benefits programs, steward role and location changes, etc. Lead team in ensuring compliance with labor laws and tailoring practices to local jurisdictions as needed.
  • Compensation, Benefits, and Overall Employee Value Proposition (EVP): Steward and evolve BSR compensation, benefits, and EVP to recruit and retain top talent within the scope of BSR’s resources. Administer programs with clarity, transparency, and fairness.
  • Policy Development and Enforcement: Develop, maintain, and enforce BSR policies for the protection and well-being of individual staff members and the organization as a whole.
  • Talent Management: Work with leaders across the organization to continually refine our approach to talent management in ways that support individual growth and achieve organizational goals. Includes assessment of current talent and future needs, performance management, learning and development, and career progression.
  • Learning & Development: Assess learning and development needs across the organization and deploy resources (internal staff time and external spending) to prioritize and focus learning and development for individual growth and organizational needs. Oversee and evolve BSR’s framework for learning and development.
  • Org Culture and Employee Engagement: Oversee and evolve practices that foster an organizational culture of collegiality, teamwork, engagement, and overall performance to meet the needs of our members and internal business goals while advancing our overall sustainability impact.
  • DEI: Working with the CEO, other senior leaders, and in concert with the DEI Task Force, assess and prioritize the organization’s DEI needs and opportunities. Lead the People & Culture team in making progress on our DEI goals and support the needs of a diverse global team, promoting equity in our practices and ensuring an inclusive environment.
  • Data and Insights: Maintain and analyze organizational HR data to track progress and generate insights for organizational decision-making.

Compensation


At BSR we have implemented a transparent total compensation framework with an emphasis on internal equity. In order to maintain our equity, our salary ranges for this position are listed below. Compensation will be determined by candidate experience and cohort level determination.US: $126,670-$175,516France: 86,566 €-124,946 €UK: £76,457-£116,597Denmark: 674,684 kr.-1,012,026 kr.

Director level -10%Managing Director level-12%

Qualifications 


Note: ONLY candidates with these specific requirements will be considered: 

  • HR Expertise: Experience leading HR functions across recruiting, talent and performance management, compensation and benefits, DEI and organizational culture, and employment law. Strong preference for candidates with experience in a professional services organization.
  • Global Orientation: strong cross-cultural competencies and experience leading HR support across a variety of jurisdictions.
  • Business Fluency: Solid understanding of business needs and drivers and HR’s role in meeting those. Experience in non-profit and/or mission-driven organization strongly preferred.
  • Business Partner: History of partnering with business leaders to understand team/group needs and determine what can and should be supported with HR policies and practices. Skilled at prioritizing and negotiating with all parties to agree on achievable plans.
  • Team Management: ability to assess business needs and align the People & Culture team with those, getting the right individuals in the right roles, tweaking and tailoring as appropriate, and then leading the team in prioritizing and executing the work.
  • Performance Management: Expertise in performance management practices that generate individual performance to enable team performance and organizational performance.
  • Talent Management: As a people-oriented business, our team members are everything! We seek a leader with a background in a people-intensive organization who can align our HR people and practices toward recruiting, developing, and engaging a high-performing team
  • Consultation and Communication: Orientation toward engagement and consultation with internal groups as policy and programs are developed. Special strengths in communicating decisions with precision and clarity to a global team that seeks high levels of transparency and understanding of decision-making rationale.
