Internship Summary


As an intern in the competition policy area, you will report directly to Fred Ashton, Director, Competition Policy at the American Action Forum (AAF).  Fred brings over a decade of data management experience and macroeconomic analysis to AAF. His research focuses on analysis of regulatory and legislative proposals affecting competition, antitrust, merger, and consolidation-related economic activity. Prior to joining AAF, Fred served as the senior economist for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association; prior to that, he was an international database manager at Haver Analytics concentrating on data sourced from the International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Bank for International Settlements, and World Bank.

Fred holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Penn State and a master’s degree in Applied Economics from the University of Maryland.

Responsibilities


As part of the internship, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Research assistance: Interns will provide research assistance and data collection for their issue area director
  • Event attendance: Interns will virtually attend Capitol Hill hearings, private speaker events, and events held by other DC think tanks to analyze and report on the information presented
  • Forum event support: Interns will help promote, run, and evaluate all Forum events
  • Semester portfolio and presentation: Interns will create a portfolio to showcase their work completed at the Forum and give a brief presentation on a topic of their choice

Hours and Compensation


  • Interns must be available to work 20 to 29 hours per week in our DC office
  • Interns will earn an hourly wage
  • Interns will use their own computer/equipment
  • This is a part-time, paid internship

Qualifications


  • An interest in the politics and policies of center-right conservatives
  • Ability to work independently and develop new research ideas
  • Excellent writing ability and communication skills
  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Basic knowledge of federal regulatory process a plus
