The Programmer will be analyzing requirements, designing, developing, and maintaining applications on IBM I using various versions of RPG with the emphasis on analysis and more complex development activities.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Insurance/Credit Insurance industry experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in RPG, RPGLE FREE, SQL and CLP.
  • Knowledge of the design and implementation relational databases, with hands-on experience with DB2.
  • Demonstrated competency with web services, developing web services in the RPG environment, Service Oriented Architecture, and multi-tier software design and development.
  • Familiarity with DDS (Data Description Specifications) and Subfiles.
  • Knowledge of Java, XML, and Web Services (SOAP/REST) is a plus.
  • Understanding of development best practices, design patterns and common frameworks.
  • Knowledge of object-to-relational mapping tools.

Primary Job Functions:


  • Work closely with business relationship managers(BRM), team members, and end users to understand business needs and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Gather data to further identify customer change requests, define scope of work and software/system requirements for implementation.
  • Diagnose and resolve application and system issues, ensuring minimal downtime and continuity of business operations.
  • Conduct unit tests and support quality assurance testing to ensure code accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to specifications. Develop and document programs, applying knowledge of programming techniques and computer systems.
  • Maintain and support applications to keep them performing in accordance with technical and functional specifications.
  • Provide input for the QA with regard to test requirements and test plans and assists in the creation of test scripts
  • Update, modify, and optimize existing RPG applications to improve performance, adapt to new business processes, or integrate with modern technologies.
  • Perform system tests and debug programs according to results of system test and user acceptance test.
  • Write technical documentation to describe program logic and coding.
  • Liaise with and provide input to the BRM on project/task progress and issues.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality, accurate code.
  • Experience with integrated development tools like RDI (Rational Developer for i) or PDM.
